The lighting is awesome. The building on the left is such a nice contrast! Great shot.

September 9, 2012 - St. John's, N.L.

The lighting today was fantastic. The colours were crisp and true (not blue in the distance) as far as the eye could see. And it was Doors Open St. John's, a chance to get inside some usually-closed historic buildings and private homes. Anyhow, here's a sea level panorama of downtown from Southside Road.

You should start a Flickr account, Bolognium. I was trying to find panoramas of the 20 largest CMAs in Canada and it was very easy to find ones of cities far smaller than London, Kitchener, St. Catherine's, etc.

There aren't many people posting pictures in these areas on there.

That first picture is awesome. Absolutely love the layering effect caused by the steep hills.

And I actually do have a flickr, I've just never updated it. I'll get around to it eventually.

And here is another picture of downtown London's eastern apartment blocks. This one's taken from a window of the sprawling South Street Hospital Campus. A ton of hospital buildings are scheduled for demolition to make way for new high-rise apartments along the Thames.

351 Water Street by SignalHillHiker, on Flickr

They're building a giant bunker for cars on the waterfront in St. John's? Aren't most cities tearing those urban mistakes up and putting them underground?

I wish we were as well. But we won't. Harbour Drive is already mostly parking garage. A few different factors:

The harbour has always been industrial.
The bedrock is too expensive to blast into.
The land in this particular area is just rubble pushed into the harbour after the 1892 fire.

The problem with where 351 is being built is that Harbour Drive is technically built on the harbour. Most of how harbour drive came about was the deposit of all the debris and soot from the fire of 1892. There really isn't much room to build down before water from the harbour begins to flood through.

Moving away from the harbour isn't much easier. The bedrock level is literally 6-12 inches down, making digging downward very difficult.
