I gave you the numbers...

For Manitoba in 2011 it was $8,384, for Saskatchewan in 2011 it was $14,535.
So, the first $8834 made is tax free in Manitoba, but the first $14535 is tax free in Saskatchewan.

The basic personal amount is a fundamental tax credit that surely needs to be included to do fair comparisons - it applies to all income earners.

Oh, ok. I didn't realize that is what you were providing. I am still relatively new at paying taxes - I've only had to do it twice - and I have never paid them in either MB or SK.

Where do you find the exemptions like that? I would like to look at them? It's weird that they don't provide them on the rate comparison on RA. It seems to be mute to show strict rates without including exemptions and credits.

All of this being said...

With potash prices still under $500/t and natural gas under $2/GJ, it should be interesting to see how much the SK government makes in resource royalties and if they slip into a fiscal deficit position again this year.

The Sask government is assuming $460.17/t in 2012 and $477.11/t in 2013 for potash, and $3.00/GJ in 2012 and $3.50/GJ in 2013 for natural gas. Potash right now is at $480/t and natural gas is $2.8/GJ although the latter isn't a huge money maker for the province. Only $12.5M in natural gas revenue is expected for 2012-13.

As of today the AECO (Alberta) spot price on NGX is about $1.80/GJ

Not sure where you are getting $2.80/GJ from

Regardless, if we made $0 from natural gas in 2012-13, it wouldn't break the bank. We have a pretty hefty rainy day fun.

Manitoba is still doing pretty well, all things considered. Imagine what we could do with a few more fossilized dinosaurs under our feet.

BMO joins chorus of bright forecasts for Manitoba

By: by Murray McNeill
Thursday, May 3, 2012

"WINNIPEG — The Bank of Montreal is the latest forecaster to predict Manitoba will be one of the country’s leading economic performers in 2012.

In its latest Provincial Monitor report released today, BMO Capital markets predicts the Manitoba economy will post the third strongest real gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, at 2.6 per cent.

The only two provinces it thinks will do better are Alberta and Saskatchewan, at a projected 3.4 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively."

Hey look at that... Didn't I say third strongest? I believe so. Within the next three years it read 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Not necessarily in that order.

No. I thought it was well known that the basic personal amount for Manitoba is very low compared to other provinces.

Manitoba:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/50....html#P39_2245

Saskatchewan:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/50....html#P35_2374

So while our rates are competitive, this is what makes income taxes lower for people in Saskatchewan. (And it also takes thousands of low income people completely off the tax roll - as a left-leaning person I am very fond of this)

It was cloudy here! I don't think the sun has been visible for any eclipse in this region in my life.

We pair them in Thunder Bay and have them walk around during daylight hours, which has made a noticeable difference, but night crime is still an issue. They tend not to stray too far from coffee shops though. I once saw the pair of them walk a mile up the street to get to Dairy Queen for lunch.

But overall it is an improvement. Thunder Bay has expanded its beat cop programme every year since it started.

Crap, CP rail went on strike. How bad will this hurt Saskatchewan? We are heavily depended on the tracks.

I don't think it'll last long. I live beside a CP rail yard and it has been quite quiet today.
