There is something quite similar to that proposed for Granville and Drake. Some renderings were posted here a while ago but I can't find them and it has changed a bit since then.

Oh and thanks to Hed for compiling these. I think a lot of them are kinda gaudy but there are some real jems in there. Even if something like that isn't going to happen in Vancouver they are still nice to look at!

Can we change the thread to Contemporary buildings? I keep expecting to see 'Modern' architecture. Nitpicky, I know.

I'd like to see any of those smaller buildings. I like marquee that comes not just from size. But hey, if you can find one that's tall and brilliant looking, I'll take it.

I'd love to see a tall 220-260 metre building plopped at one of the sites of the Waterfront Transit hub development. Something that walks away from the average Vancouver tower and screams power:

The other buildings at the hub would be 180-200 metres tall.

[QUOTE=awvan;4283638]Any chance we could get descriptions/labels/locations of said posted buildings?[QUOTE]

Th only ones in China I'm positive about are these:

This one is going up in Suzhou (about 40m minutes by train from Shanghai). It's called Suzhou Gate. I'm there often for work, so next time I go I'll get a pic of it under construction.

Beijing. Built.

This one is going up in Shezhen, China. I saw it last weekend.

Also in Beijing. Built.

This is UC in Guangzhou, China. I think it'll be the greenest building in the world when complete.

Proposal in Shanghai

The Jiangbei Twin Towers. Approved in Beijing

The 632m Shanghai Center in Shanghai. It's been UC for close to a year.

I would rather have our boring buildings that these things any day.
Come on... yea lets build a building that looks like a cheese grater or a pile of tin foil or bubbles sliding down bathroom tiles or just 30 random shapes interspliced together. I would love the Ritz Carlton proposal or the Bow in Calgary, but really, most of this stuff is too crazy. It's stupid to build something super tacky that sticks out like a sore thumb. Yes, there are cases like the Eiffel Tower and our Science World, where something that was a big gamble turned out to be timeless. But most of these things will be as 'cool' in a few years as the big concrete brutalist things that eastern europe are removing as we speak. Do we really want a big piece of bizzarchitechture that will make tourists say "Vancouver is a nice place, but what the hell was that big irregular metal and glass stack of pulsating cuboids that leans twisted asymmetrically over the skytrain tracks?"

Couldn't agree more, I'd rather have a few elegant timeless towers then almost any of those. We all complain about the Sears building now, but when it was built it was considered cutting edge, tastes change quickly.

this one (gehry, brooklyn) was just shelved to cut costs, but damn, it's a pretty neat plan:

the centre building there is a basketball stadium and the rest around are residential and office, with commercial at street level.

ironically your ideas for inspiration are IMO all plagued with same issue van faces today, repetition.

I find most thing being built today to be an 'icon' are too unimagined.

How about some stone? some wood? some art deco nouveau

i kinda like this building. and i think it would work well in vancouver if it was toned down a bit.

i would have it as a gate to our CBD.

I feel as though there is a happy medium. While I don't want Vancouver to become another architectural freakshow like Dubai et al I wouldn't mind a few more distinctive yet tasteful buildings thrown into the mix.
