School board HQ on target for summer opening
(Hamilton Mountain News, Gord Bowes, Dec 9 2013)

The windows will be going in soon and the interior of the building will start to take shape over the next few months, says the project manager of the public school board’s new Mountain headquarters.

“As long as it is enclosed in January I feel comfortable it is progressing (on schedule),” said Melissa Cohen-White, and the project should be be ready for staff to move in during July.

The building should be closed in by the end of January, she said. Some interior work which doesn’t depend on the building being enclosed has already begun, she said.

Exterior work such as the aluminum cladding will be done after that, but all the interior work such as drywalling can proceed, said Cohen-White.

Central Mountain councillor Scott Duvall said traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Upper Wentworth and Fieldway Drive, which is being renamed Education Court, to help with increased traffic in and out of the area.

The tender for the work will go out early in the new year and the work, which includes reconstruction of the traffic islands, should be completed before the headquarters opens.

The board is paying the cost of the intersection work, he said.

The new headquarters was deemed necessary to house the all board’s administrative staff, which were spread out over five locations, and in order to avoid extensive renovation costs of its Education Centre at 100 Main St. West.

It is being built on the site of the former Crestwood school on Millwood Place, west of Upper Wentworth. The $31.6-million building was approved in 2011 after the school board sold Main St. West property to McMaster University for a health campus.

For over a year, administrative staff has been housed in space at the Standard Life Building, the Stelco Tower and the Robert Thompson Building, and using Hamilton City Hall for its board meetings.

The board is also moving the Mohawk Trail school to the new headquarters site. The school was built in 1882 and located at the corner of Mohawk Road West and West 15th Street.

That move will probably occur in March or April, said Cohen-White.

this is probably the worst decision that was ever made in Hamilton.... why would you move all of these city workers into the middle of a housing subdivision in the middle of suburban Hamilton mountain??!??!?!?!?!? this building would've been an incredible addition to the down town area on one of the many empty lots ...or in a retrofitted historic building ....

The most self-indulgent misuse of taxpayer dollars I have witnessed since I moved back to Hamilton in 97. This benefits nobody other than the overpaid exec and admin who want free parking close to the linc.

It's sickening

My gf and her fellow staff teach at a high school here in Hamilton and would agree with you.

$31.6m for the new building... how much did they get for the sale of the land?

I just can't help but think that money should've gone towards schools... I know they're getting some efficiencies out of this, and I don't really know how the funding works (ie, if that money could've gone towards schools, or if it was earmarked for Board of Ed buildings), but the whole thing seems gross.

Final touches on Education Centre
(The Hamilton Spectator: Saturday, March 21st, 2015)

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board's new Education Centre by Lime Ridge Mall finally has the back-ordered glass safety panels needed to finish its main stairs and public gallery.

Board chair Todd White said he's been told the stairs will open by mid-April and be the last piece in finalizing the $31.6-million centre's construction.

Roped off, the stairs have been a noticeable eyesore since the board held its first meeting in November there because they are visible through the large glass windows that make up the front entrance.

Construction was initially slated to be completed by September, when staff moved into the three-level centre, but the buzzing whir of power saws was still loud enough at the March 4 policy committee meeting to make it hard to hear trustees at times.

"Aside from the stairs, it's 100 per cent aesthetic," White said of the remaining work, which includes fixing scratches and other minor damage.

It's a real shame they chose such a suburban, difficult to get to, location and built a building that you wouldn't never find in a dense, urban city.

I've seen big box stores with less of a walk to the front doors. Ridiculous. Really shows what the school board's priorities are.

The photograph makes the walkway look much longer than it actually is. It is about 25 metres in length. For perspective, the pedestrian walkway proposed to connect MacNab Terminal to Hunter GO Station is about 300 metres in length all told.

Putting aside the issue that the Board should have stayed downtown, I think the new building itself looks great.
