These garages where from the days when architects and engineers were toying with the idea of vertical mechanical garages that used elevators to store cars on each floor. Many older large cities had them, but only a few survived.
Hotel Harrison Garage (Chicago):
You have the now demolished Quincy Street Garage as was mentioned that stood 285 feet (25 floors). But, the tallest one of these types, I believe, was the now demolished Carew-Netherland Garage in Cincy that stood 342 feet (27 floors).
