And count me in with the people that think the Alexandria is ugly, it's too industrial looking to be artsy/modern, and too wacky and asymmetrical to be industrial.

Is it safe?
Hey we're not all engineers here. We include the attractiveness of structures in almost all of our discussions of the merits of Architecture on this forum.

Major bridges are public infrastructure monuments. They are very visible in the community and will often be around longer than buildings. As a result, some effort must be made to make them attractive. This is of course subjective, however, we should be past the days of installing slabs of concrete for bridges. The first priority is to make sure that they serve their purpose but some money should be invested to make them attractive, even memorable. When you think of San Fransisco, what do you think of first? The Golden Gate Bridge of course, and seeing it close-up is a memorable experience. When you think of Sydney Australia, what do you think of first but the Harbour Bridge and the neighbouring Arts Centre.

Yeah, what he said.

My point has always been that the location deserves something more amazing. It's an opportunity lost.

Work on the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge continues and it is now waterproof and ready for the elements!

Are the approaches as ready for asphalt as the bridge appears to be?

From the live webcam picture (http://www.sabridge.net/) it appears that the sidewalks and possibly curbs are installed on the west approach, but I'm not sure what else might need to be done.

There's not a good shot of the east approach.

Are you talking about the Alexandra? If it's an "opportunity lost" then it was lost 100+ years ago. Nobody is going to be tearing down that bridge; it is an historic structure.

Bridge "ahead" of schedule

Slated to open in September 2014, they are now saying they are ahead of their revised schedule but haven't committed to how much ahead yet. The use of the term "ahead" with this project is ridiculous but the opening will be very welcome to residents on both sides-Barrhaven, lacking road links and Riverside South, lacking shopping and services.

The bridge is paved; I live in the area and noted all the street lighting seems to be up, sidewalks are done, it just seems like they need to pave the approachment to the bridge, landscaping and a few other things.

some photos and update from June 16 here:

I use the term "Opening ahead of the projected delayed opening date."

Bridge to open in July

Opening a "month" ahead of schedule. (or 3 years late if you prefer to read it that way)

Troubled Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge set to open

By Jon Willing, Ottawa Sun
First posted: Thursday, July 10, 2014 06:55 PM EDT | Updated: Thursday, July 10, 2014 06:58 PM EDT

A bridge linking two south Ottawa communities over the Rideau River will finally open Saturday afternoon, Coun. Steve Desroches announced on Twitter Thursday.

The $48-million arch-style Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge was supposed to be done in 2012, but the contractor went into receivership and a bonding company took over.

The bridge project has been Desroches's key file during his time on city council. The rep for Gloucester-South Nepean is not seeking re-election in the October vote, so seeing the bridge open will be especially satisfying for the deputy mayor.

It had become clear over the past month that the bridge could be ready earlier than the anticipated September opening.

The bridge is a major piece of transportation infrastructure that will relieve north-south traffic congestion, giving commuters the option to travel on either side of the river. Riverside South residents will have a quick access point to amenities in Barrhaven by car, bus and bike.

Just as critical, the bridge will enable Barrhaven commuters to access a possible O-Train station in Riverside South if the city goes ahead with a planned extension of the diesel rail service over the next nine years.

So will OC Transpo announce that the 99 is extended to Barrhaven Centre or what? I feel like this should happen ASAP after the bridge opens.
Edit: Can they also extend the 94 to Riverside South? Just checked OC's website and the last 99 leave downtown on a weekday is 11:15pm. That's horrible if you ever wanted to enjoy yourself downtown and take the bus home.

I hope the City will start expanding Strandherd as soon as they can (from Greenbank all the way to the 416).

There is no doubt the traffic on Strandherd will increase significantly when the bridge is complete. There will also be additional traffic from construction in the Strandherd Business Park where Myers Toyota and Barrhaven Honda, among other retailers, are expected to open sometimes next year.

The approved plan is to extend the 99 to Barrhaven Town Centre and extend the 94 to Riverview once the bridge opens.
