The Universe

Since a wave of 'one per day'-threads suddenly became very popular on Skyscrapercity i deceided i make a similar thread there, and now a copy of it
here on SSP, with the title "The Universe". I will post two images every day of the Universe. I will post many large size images, up to 2000 pixels
wide/high, as size does matter out in space!

If you really want even bigger image, just pm me, as most of these images are unbelieveably huge, up to 500Mb (30000x20000 pixels etc.)

Not exactly sure what you mean?
__________

To put things in size, here is the 2MASS image, or 1/8 of the total image consisting of most stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, our own
little galaxy. And a second photoshopped image comparing our sun up to Sirius (a star) which is far from the biggest star, but one
of our closest stars, and the brightest one. Then Sirius up to VY Canis Majoris, which is the biggest known star. Our planets is
much enlarged though.

Day Three:
Millions of stars

Sun vs. Sirius vs. VY Canis Majoris

I mean, did you take these photos? Do you have access to an enormous telescope? They're beautiful pictures, I was just wondering how you got them. I have a feeling I can't do anything like this with my Canon point & shoot camera.

Nah, my 18 optical zoom camera is not up to this test, so these are telescope pictures, which NASA publish through several pages. But i wish i had a camera in handsize with ten thousand optical zoom!

these are the most wonderful and amazing photographs ever. It is like pornography for intelligent people! Just thinking about the wonder of these photos takes imagination.

I've always wanted to get into astrophotography. I should once I can afford it and move to a dark town.

these are hubbel quality. Which are OUR pictures too since our tax money puts that telescope up there to capture them.

This is a amature picture of M42 the orion nebula.

Even this photo is most likely done with a very expensive and powerful telescope. The biggest challenge is having a motor that follows the subject in the sky for a atleast 20-30 minutes to capture the light to make the picture. I am a astro geek, and if you ever look in a telescope at night stars and planets move fast through your scope and more faster and more powerful scopes from the Earth's rotation.

Day six
Hubble Ultra Deep Field
>> The most famous image of the universe ever taken is this image taken by Hubble Telescope in 2003. 10 000 different
galaxies can be seen in this image, some of them is only lights from 13 billion year old galaxies, long gone by today.

The Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4039)
>> The Antennae Galaxies is two galaxies which is colliding and becomming one supergalaxy. This is likely the future of
our Milky Way when it collides with the Andromeda Galaxy.

These pictures just Boggel my mind, and to think how much is out there that we can't even see or imagine. I can't want till that new space telescope goes up. I forgot what the name of it was, but supposedly it's going to be powerful enough to not only see far away stars with more clarity and detail, but also planets. I think it's called "planet finder" or somethign along those lines.
