also I have looked EVERYWHERE in the archives, but I have had a very hard time finding out what originally existed on the parking lot properties in the bg of the picture above (below)- was it just old houses demolished to make parking lots?

The parking lot properties contained factories, churches, businesses and houses.

You can look up the details of the properties in the annual city directories at the library. They have from 1853 to 2013 available on microfilm.

Library and Archives Canada has the directories for Hamilton from 1853 to 1900 online here:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...-editions.aspx

The most recent directory online is for 1922 posted here: https://archive.org/details/vernonhamilton00vernuoft

Also there are Fire Insurance Maps that show the names, sizes, construction material etc. for each building.
The library will have the originals or microfilmed versions for various years.
McMaster Map Library has put the 1898 and 1911/1916 Hamilton versions that are out of copyright online here:
http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/collection/fire

McMaster also has a collection of aerial photos posted online here:
https://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/airphotos/Home

there may have been another factory behind it as well in the area where the church stands on the corner..

also fun historical fact - this image shows the lister block before it burned down the first time and was rebuilt - that's why it looks different.

so this is whats been irking me:

William Thomas original facade

as you can see 2/3s of the pediments had been sheared off to put the awful steel siding over this part of the building..they state they are going to put them back, but what about these sections? Are they going to REBUILD those sections to match the 1/3 that still had its pediments intact?

There's a post about it, the City had the City Hall parking area up for proposals. Council approved to explore potential proposals. I'm assuming the bidding is over and there's probably proposals by now.

so I am assuming this region of the city is going to become "hotel city" as they seem to be condensing all the hotels into one general area?

Here's a few more images from that day. It's starting to make an appearance over the other buildings that surround it. I could see it peaking out from John & King, and it's impact on the skyline looking south up James is pretty dramatic.

it's starting to make the other buildings look small - which is a feat, since the federal and lister block buildings are not small! It'll have a nice toronto skyline vibe, without being too much

now if only they would start the tivoli project..

I've always thought that "smokeless" building is gorgeous btw - it's a pity it's only appreciated in the winter, as that tree takes up the entire view of it in the summer.. still it IS a nice tree

also what's up with the windows on the second to top floor in that picture of the lister block? They almost look .. broken... perhaps just a wonky reflection..
