Interesting shots from a great vantage point. Thanks for posting them, it is not a perspective you get to see often. Don't think it really does justice to downtown Indy though. I think this city looks its best at street level. I currently live in Indy but have lived in a number of large cities and have traveled to most. I find downtown Indianapolis to be one of the better downtowns in the country and was very surprised to find that out when I moved here a few years back. It is certainly not a downtown that is deserted after 5pm. The city plays host to all sorts of large events annually or on a regular basis (Mens and Womens Final Four, NFL, NBA, Indy 500, US Grand Prix, NASCAR Brickyard 400, Black Expo, etc.) and generally gets high marks from visitors. It would probably do well as a Super Bowl host city just because it can accomodate large events and keep people entertained .... if it wasn't freakin' 10 degrees outside at the end of January
I think the trees and the mostly flat terrain hide the urban nature of the city just outside of downtown. There are a number of urban islands outside of downtown that you just can't make out from these pictures. Many of these areas are leftovers from the industrial past of an older midwestern city, with factories either abandonded, in use or reused in some other capacity surrounded by dense housing. Some of these areas are medium sized towns that were annexed as Indianapolis grew (see Irvington, Broad Ripple, etc.). It is true though that much of the city is suburban in nature, due in large part to the consolidation of the city in the 70's when the city swallowed most of its suburbs in Marion County.
