Not sure if it’s 100% accurate but this page has some info on the height restrictions. If this is true, then the restrictions are in place but are “flexible” on a case-by-case basis.

In 1971 it was 104m.

But it could have changed...

Although other buildings are taller, the top of the Peace Tower was supposed to be the highest point in town. I believe exceptions were made in the past (would be interesting to know why .....). Place de Ville, for example, always looks to me to be about six stories too tall on the overall skyline when viewed from the west. I have to wonder, however, whether the height restriction still makes sense.

^^^ Height restriction related to proximity to Diane Holmes' residence? Actually, in theory it seems to have something to do with view corridors and not overwhelming the Parliamentary Precinct with a wall of contemporary buildings.

I know I posted this somewhere else before. The height restriction has to do with viewplanes. No building can be apparently taller than the Peace Tower from a number of strategic points (don't know them), creating what are essentially viewplanes.

Will Ottawa ever see a development push beyond 30-35 floors? And if so, I wonder what developer would most likely do it...

Viewplane

Buildings can in fact be taller; their are a umber of key viewplanes though that must be respected. I think they are shown in the Official Plan. When I get a sec I'll dig them out.

I wonder, if Ottawa was to get something taller than 30 stories, where would it likely happen...?

The Metropole has I believe 32 floors.

At 35 floors the city may implode...

The city will be blown over by one of those infamous wind tunnels we keep hearing about if we ever build too high.

I believe the (admittedly awesome) view of the Parliament Buildings and the Château Laurier from Nicholas Street northbound coming off the Queensway is one of them. If you happen to drive that stretch just as the sun sets, it’s just gorgeous.

The Minto Suites Hotel is 31 floors, but hotels aren't known for their high ceilings.

Minto has recently built some tall stuff in the GTA...I bet they'd build taller buildings here too, if they were allowed...

Ottawa has a wonderful skyline right now (not sure of the credit):

Not tall, but a rather wonderful 'historical' skyline, comparable in some ways to Quebec City's wonderful skyline. Not at all bad for a 150 year old city!

OK yes, it was the Civic. I guess that one was too easy . I thought it was an interesting vantage point from the roof of the parking garage at the Civic Hospital.
