I think LSD could end at Sheridan Rd. at the bend by Calvary cemetery. With new lakefill there's plenty of open space there to make a good outlet to a busy 4 lane road.
There's not alot of traffic on LSD north of Foster now anyway, I don't think it would have to be as wide, maybe 2 lanes each direction as a parkway.

I always thought the lake-fill, road ext would be a boon for the RP. Increase and connect usable beach front. Protect beach from erosion. Create estuary for bird and fish habitat. Increase parkland and recreation. Remove NS through traffic from Sheridan. Decrease express bus times from Evanston and NS. And the big bonus, allow for a pedestiran/bike friendly road diet on Sheridan with better local and express service to loop. And more pleasant dining experiences with less traffic.

A lot seems to have gotten lost in translation somewhere. There's no state or federal land involved.

The Chicago Park District transferred the land to the city, which plans to transfer it to the Obama Foundation. This is apparently an attempt to circumvent state statute, namely 70 ILCS 1205/10-7:
Any park district owning or holding any real estate is authorized to convey such property to a nongovernmental entity in exchange for other real property of substantially equal or greater value as determined by 2 appraisals of the property and of substantially the same or greater suitability for park purposes without additional cost to such district.
Of course, if the plaintiffs truly had no chance at winning the case, the judge wouldn't have last week allowed it to proceed.

^ Huh? Clearly the plantiffs did not have "no chance" at winning. That's what the comment was. Was not a prediction as to ruling.



For the Ten-millionth time, all of this (and it may very well not be over yet) could have been avoided with a smarter, more strategic site selection. While I'm not personally opposed to it going here in the end, it was a dumb, costly decision.

Predictions were on page 45.

Plaintiffs are appealing, but I think the only hope now is a reëxamination by the Lightfoot Administration.

Protect Our Parks has Richard Epstein representing them in the appeal. Story from the Hyde Park Herald.

Epstein is a widely respected legal scholar, but I think his arguments here are rather weak. In the HPH story, he's just throwing all kinds of things at the wall, including questions of fact that an appellate court simply won't consider. Epstein had filed an amicus brief in the circuit court case with the curious argument that Mayor Emanuel, as Obama's former chief of staff, had a conflict of interest.

Building the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park will have an “adverse effect” on the park and on the adjacent Midway Plaisance, a new report by city officials for state and federal agencies has revealed.

But while the massive project would alter portions of the property that justified listing it on the National Register of Historic Places, the newly released report is just one step in the federal review process.

Building the Obama center at the park “will have an adverse effect to Jackson Park Historic Landscape District and Midway Plaisance because it will alter, directly or indirectly, characteristics of the historic property that qualify it for inclusion in the National Register,” the report stated. “Primary physical changes that are concentrated in the western perimeter of Jackson Park and the eastern Midway Plaisance impact adjacent park areas including the Lagoons, Fields, and Lake Shore. The changes alter the legibility of the design of the cultural landscape in ways that diminish the overall integrity of spatial organization in the property as a whole.”

Margaret Schmid of Jackson Park Watch said the report understates just how dramatic the traffic patterns would change because of the closure of Cornell Drive and other roads. She pointed out that the recreational changes written about in the report haven’t been approved by the National Park Service.

Of all the complaints to have, claiming Cornell's closure is a big deal just seems downright silly and intentionally dishonest in my book.
