how tall was the building you saw? or was it still going up?
It looked like it was at the 4th floor and it had 2 larger elevator shafts one on the front and one on the back. I will have to go up there and get a closer look. Thank you, I do recall that project now, it was just columns sitting there for along time.

Looks like it's gonna turn out like all those developments in Tuscaloosa that sit just south of campus on the north side of the tracks. Lots of parking below the building, nice apartments with balconies on top.

EDIT: And yea, Tim, the design has changed. They've since downsized. Maybe since Dr. Witt became chancellor and said that he wanted UAB to grow like Alabama has grown the developer decided to plop down a cookie cutter design like we see all too often over here...

That's OK, as long as the development is successful and leads to other kinds of developments in this area and the city we'll take it.

No, it just a structure I'm familiar with. If you have a rendering that is different than that, I'd LOVE to see it.

I agree that residential development in this part of town is welcome, but if this kind proliferates... it tends to lead to dead commuter neighborhoods. It'll be a bit different for Birmingham and might be less susceptible to being "killed". We just have so much of these.....

Did this development not have to go through the design review process?

I've only seen one article regarding this updated project and it did not mention the Design Review Committee. The project started pretty quick after it was announced.

They have started moving dirt on the site for U.A.B.'s Student Center, and they are putting up a construction fence on the site for the new Student Residence Hall on 9th Avenue and 16th Street S.

so the old hill center is completely demolished?

also, the new residence hall is on a current parking lot, correct? or will there be some demolition of existing buildings?

Yes the Hill Center is completely gone. Yes the residence hall will be built on a parking lot that runs along 9th Avenue S. from 16th Street to 17th Street directly across from Denman Hall.

Construction has begun all out on the the new student center on University BLVD and 14th Street South with steel rods coming up out of the ground, and digging to remove the asphalt parking lot and trees and light poles for the new student residence on 9th Avenue and 16th Street is about half finished.

Very tudor. I need to do a drive-by.

That would be good, it is hard to tell in the state of construction that it is in now what the finish product will look like.

The new U.A.B. dorm being built on 9th Avenue will be a 2 crane affair.

They have finally placed the bottom part of the construction crane at the Student Center site, I was starting to worry that something happened to halt construction on the center. I guess the rest of the crane will be there by the end of the week.

That entire situation pisses me off. I don't mean to spread any more rumors, but I've seen on some Memphis Tigers message boards where some have said it's more than football.

To add insult to injury this all comes at a time where UAB's program seems to be on the upswing. UA's board should concern themselves with something else for the time being.
