The render looks amazing, I hope it shapes up like that. I wonder what the plans are for the corner of Bay and Main, beside the hotel. It seems far fetched even for these guys to leave an ugly parking lot beside such a nice building.

Is this building really 17 floors? It looks like it's only 15 floors, or at least that is what I count from looking at both renderings.

Apparently the current crane is for the condo building while another crane will go up soon to build the Homewood Suites building.

Does anyone know the official height or floor count of the condo's?
From the rendering I counted 18 floors.

180 room hotel, i think should be at least 20-floors. This is great news, the tallest building since the 1991 Bentley condos.

Definitely enjoying the concept drawing but we'll have to see what the end result is. Not really too enthused by the massive amount of public money being requested, but I suppose that's the way you have to do things to do such a massive build in this downtown. Let's see if Darko can turn around his track record.

I noticed that the building at Bay and Main is already up to ground level yesterday. It's going pretty quick already.

A lot of the glass has been replaced with stucco on the new render:

The reduction in glass is surely driven by budget but also by the changes to the Ontario Building Code that came into effect in January of this year. The changes make it very difficult for a building to be built with more than 40% glazing without doing extensive energy modelling to prove that it still meets new energy standards. That means all those glassy condos that have been built in Toronto the last few years would be essentially impossible to build today.

I hope that they use bricks instead of stucco for the red part. It will look horrible if the whole building is clad in stucco, will look like just another suburban hotel.

Brick? What a novel idea! Judging by his other architectural accomplishments however, he lost his directions to the brick shop years ago.

it looks like the crane should be going up any day now. There are more peices for it laying beside the base at the site.

it's not "bricks" like you think?, to please the faux heritage crowd... these are engineered fake brick veneers that are glued up in sheets and are paintable, so you can get the tone-on-tone look if you want to break up the homogenous look of 10 stories of what is basically vinyl siding, stamped to look like bricks. Almost as bad as stucco imo. I need more steel and glass.

You guys freak out because it might resemble the Royal Connaught. Not even close. More craftsmen talent went into Connaught's cornice than this entire building will. They (builders) don't lay bricks anymore, too expensive. When you can glue sheets of stuff that look like bricks for a fraction of the cost, and still keep the heritage people happy.

But then again, I don't want to see bricks, real or fake. Bring on a post-mod design with steel and glass. Show us the next design that follows post-mod or at least give us a 90s version of it. Not this trash.

The headdress was cool on the original design. It looked like it was to reflect lighting on it downward and give a glowing effect to the headdress. Something that our skyline could really use..... lighting. And even a little spire was incorporated, imagine that, the first scraper in Hamilton with a real spire.

This is horrible compared to the original rendering. Even the new roof is lame, what is that? A suburban Home Depot garden lattice crown? Give him the grant/loans but require he builds something like the original plan.

For perspective on the potential material used for this rendering, here is a rendering for the Homewood Suites built recently in Philedelphia:

image source: Univercity City, Philedelphia Penn http://explow.com/University_City,_P...,_Pennsylvania

The completed Homewood Suites in Philly looks like this:

Looks like concrete preform with coloured metal cladding. That's not to say this will be the same material used here, just saying that was what was used there.

I didn't expect this to be a glass building, Homewood Suites is not a high end hotel. It offers suites for extended stays by people traveling for training or work and for those out of their homes for extended periods. It will have moderate rates mostly paid by corporations, governments and insurance claims. These things are often located along highways and have zero style.
