Sorry, this article has nothing to do with skyscraper developments. Except it has everything to do with skyscraper developments.

^ This is the least of my concerns. In order to subvert the nytimes I installed a chrome extension called "forget me". Now whenever I hit the limit I hit one little button up by search bar and voila, problem solved. Clears out your cookies, but only for the website you are on. Anyway.

More importantly, does anybody know what the "El Valor Inclusion Center" is?

The JGMA website is saying they have won the job but I can't tell from the description where it is. Either way, exciting to see this firm get more work in Chicago.

Anyway:

Wonderful to see these new renderings. Hopefully this will move forward soon. El Valor is a great organization and this will definitely be a breath of fresh air for Back of the Yards.

No, plan to convert the old Motor Club building into a Virgin Hotel fell through but they ended up going with this building, the Dearborn Bank Building, which is basically around the corner at 203 N. Wabash. I also believe construction has been going on for a few months now.

Isn't there still a different boutique hotel planning on going into that building or is that all in my head?

Also, the mullions at the Hillshire brands HQ is bad, but kind of what I expected. I guess they lose the credit they won imo from restoring the exterior to brick similar to the original design.

I don't think the mullions are bad at all. This is still a hard-edged, Chicago industrial building. It should have the simplest mullions available.

I was a little surprised at first, but Hillshire (as a brand) goes back to the 1950s. It's still a meaningless fruitcake name, but it does have some tradition behind it.

I assume the building, if it has any signage, will be branded with the logos of notable product lines and not "Hillshire Brands". I think it's kinda awesome that the Hog Butcher of the World will have the logos of Jimmy Dean, Ball Park and Hillshire Farms overlooking a prominent downtown gateway.

Eh... I'm not a fan of the millions either. They should have done a grid like system with lots of horizontals or nothing at all.

^^^

I would have preferred butt-glazed. It would have really accentuating that horizontal stretches across the building.

I think the person who bought the old Motor Club Building out of bankruptcy last year did say a hotel was a possibility. They also said they would consider building an addition on that tiny lot next door or a parking garage, which I really hope they don't. Anyway, We should see some kind of plans for the building and the tiny lot soon I would hope.

O.K, after my post above I went and did some digging and found some recent news:Brochure dated 3/14/2012. The people who bought the building out of auction were lenders to Roti, the owner who filed for bankruptcy. Roti was trying to partner with Virgin but that deal fell through but they had already created a design for the new addition next door. It looks like, as I had hoped, the new owners are basically keeping the plans that were meant for the Virgin hotel. So it looks like plans are in the works for a hotel there.

http://ariescapital.com//wp-content/...ge_3.14.12.pdf

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
•212 Key Boutique Hotel on 15 floors
•New 14 story tower on vacant lot utilizing the existing elevator core of the historic building
•Top Floor and Roof F&B Venue – 4,350 s.f.
•4 lofted suites within the existing historic building with 17’ ceilings
•Lobby Restaurant and bar - 7,385 s.f.
•Event Space – 4,960 s.f.
•Coffee, Apparel, and Salon Space – 1,350 s.f.
•Basement BOH, Spa, and Gym – 16,658 s.f.

I'll laugh if they have a huge "Go Meat!" sign on top.

First time I think I've seen the rendering of the new building on page 14. I suppose it makes sense they want to maximize space for the new building by utilizing the elevator shafts of the old. A bit disappointing that it doesn't cantilever and push higher using the air rights over the 17thCCS. I think the glass has the potential to be pretty striking background and contrast up against the white CCS and Hotel 71 though.

Or bulldoze R Kelly's old and outrageous renovation next door.

Overall, it's a good building. But I agree, it's terrible we are demolishing the solid ordinary structures that define Chicago.

GEMS academy

Chicago Architecture Blog has news on the new GEMS Academy. It'll be west of the coast and designed by BKL apparently.

West of The Tides, meaning south of Coast.

---

2100 S Indiana
~55 apartments and retail. Apparently the new owner is going to turn the adjacent vacant lot into surface parking with landscaping until the tower component is built later on.
