Vid's building diagram things.... things..

DIRECT LINK TO DIAGRAM

A/K/A 'Boring buildings you've never heard of from towns you probably didn't know existed!'

I've been drawing these for a while and just thought I'd post a thread where people can comment on them and such. Whee.

I use paint for the images, and irfanview for resizing and some colour editing.

Umm. yeah. Here they are, in order of height.

Holiday Inn Hotel Waterfront Duluth [16 floors], this was the first illustration I did with shadows and angles and 3Dish and stuff.

Waverly Park Towers Thunder Bay [16 floors], this was a bit hard, the building is shaped like a Y (when you look at it from the top, not the side)

Best Western Waterfront Kenora, [11 floors] tallest circular building in Northern Ontario and tallest Hotel in Northwestern Ontario. My most recent drawing, too me about an hour. Considering I'm half asleep, I think it turned out sgndk.

Maplecrest Tower. 14 floors, in Thunder Bay. It looks round, but it isn't. I just sucked at drawing back then.

Red River Towers in Thunder Bay, 12 floors. The original was really bad, this version is much better. It's one of my favourites. Looks pretty good for a slab, eh?

Acadamy Heights Tower, Thunder Bay, 12 floors. The tihng on the right is a parking garage. Like Red River Tower the first draft was horrible but I made it better.

Paterson Court. 10 floors, Thunder Bay. It's red. My second worst drawing, IMO.

Holiday Inn Waterfront - 10 floors, Sault Sainte Marie Canada. I'm eerily good at drawing Holiday Inns. This one is one of my favourites.

US Bank Place in Duluth Minnesota, 10 floors. The windows on it were from a picture of the building, because I couldnt figure out how to get that colour in paint.

Whalen Building in Thunder Bay, 8 floors. didn't resize well.

12 storey Scotia Bank building in Brandon. It worked out alot better.

Tom Davies Square. Sudbury ON. 12 floors.

Any suggestions or ideas? If you've been in/around lake superior (Soo, Sudbury, Duluth, TBay, etc.) or even South Manitoba, Northern michigan/wisconsin and have pictures of a building I'll try and draw it if you want. I'm a bit out of ideas at the moment.

Also, let it be known that I really suck at requestion things to be added to the database.

When you do a 2:1 drawing, you must make the windows a bit darker. Nice drawings, BTW.

^I'll remember that. Thanks.

Roberta Bondar Place, Sault Ste Marie ON

How's that? Do the windows need to be darker?

Nice to see that someone's actually working on the everyday stuff, not just sketching up yet another diagram of some already overdone tall building.

Coming from a province that has no tall buildings, I'd have to say that it's quite easy to do. And they don't take as long.

^20 minutes. New record. Regency Towers, Thunder Bay.

Vid, for the Tower of History, since it is concrete, do you think you could add slightly darker and lighter blotches to the concrete to give it a bit more detail?

When I learn how, I will. If any one has any tips on how to do that it would be helpful. Would you just use the spraybrush thing, or what?

It would also help when I get into doing Grain Elevators. We've got 16 of em. Gotta represent. 8]

If you are using photoshop, adding 1-2% noise helps, or you can use the dodge/burn tools and put it on a splotchy brush.

^I don't have photoshop. My computer, believe it or not, isn't powerful enough to run photoshop. I use paint and irfanview.

well, you can always use the spray can tool in paint, and just alter the color tone by a little at a few variations. it is kinda hard to use though.

Well I'm really good at paint. I can just double the size of the large version to 4x size, apply the spray can to that area then shrink it back down. I have photoshop at school (where I am now; lunchtime ) but I can't view imageshack on this server (it's blocked) I can use savefile though. I should have thought of that before I left this morning. I can fix it with photoshop at school. I'll try the paint/spraybrush when I get home tonight and if it doesn't look too good I'll send it to savefile and edit it in PS at school.

I drew five diagrams yesterday, most productive day yet. Low rises are easy!

How's this? They look much better scaled down, but I don't want to have to upload anything until I'm sure they're good enough. I also took the time to make some better textures for windows, I might make a giant page of patchy concrete tomorrow so I can make things WITHOUT having to edit them at school.

7 storey building in Sudbury, in the process of finding out what its called.

Actually, this is more what I was talking about; showing the separations in the concrete. This was a very quick addition, and the lines are darker than I want them to be, but it shows what I mean:

Computers aren't very much money. All you'll need is a few hundred bucks and you can get a cheap computer which would be a huge upgrade from one that can't even run photoshop.

I don't have a FEW bucks, let alone a few hundred.

I'd install gimp but it doesnt seem to have an auto installer?

Whalen Building, Thunder Bay. Improved version.

Place Richelieu | North Bay 11 storeys

55 Nassau, Winnipeg. 39storeys, 109 metres. My tallest ilustration. (that isn't a TV tower)

It was tedious, but I wanted to try out a taller building. I think it turned out pretty good, but it could be better.

A few improvements to illustrations.. Really shows how much better I am at this now than I was back in March.

The top apartments on one side have windows instead of balconies, it's an optional thing. Some have them, some don't. It looks alot better than those bug screens or plexi glass they usually have on apartments.

From left to right: Holiday Inn Duluth 16; Waverly Park Thunder Bay 16; Maple Crest Thunder Bay 14; Acadamy Tower Thunder Bay 12; Old Ironworks Thunder Bay 12; Holiday Inn Soo St Marie 10

Most of them I just improved the width of the building so it looks better, and is more realistic. That Duluth hotel was about 100m long

I also fixed 55 Nassau
