THE "City of Fountains"...

Well, I thought I would post a fountain thread, I have not done that in a while. Sometimes I forget just how much fountains are a part of our lives here. I still have many more fountains in KC to photograph and we have some new big ones that will be coming online downtown in the next few years so I think we can still proudly say we are the "city of fountains".

enjoy...

Nice shots! I was just in KC over the weekend, I hadn't been for a while. I was happy to see the progress the city has made over the past several years in terms of redevelopment in its urban neighborhoods(of which there are more than most people probably think). There are really some nice emerging urban niches.

Great eye as usual Grid. There are a couple hundred public fountains and even more private fountains. It's pretty much a standard now that most any public/private project includes a fountain.

This site tracks over 200 but apparently hasn't been updated since 2002...
http://www.kcfountains.org/events/index.html

KC has had a hokey claim that it has the second most number of fountains in world, next to Rome - as if all were counted. It's been said unchallenged since at least the 1940s and the unverified claim probably promoted a post-reality as KC is likely now first (in working fountains) now that adding a fountain is a presumed defacto standard of most projects.

BTW, you missed one of my favorites. "The boy and frog" fountain.

Over on kcskyscrapers.com, someone posted KC's newest one. But that may only last a week...

Quote:
The fountain was sculpted by hand, and consists of three tiers composed of over 21 tons of concrete and steel. Thirteen statues, which shoot water into the top tier, are a part of the fountain. The water from the top tier flows at a rate of 67,500 gallons per hour.

Included in the fountain is a light-emitting diode, which allows the fountain to display over one million light and color combinations. It is also one of the first fountains in the world lit entirely with LED lights.
Not a good pic.. Needs Grid's eye.
