Second tower to join Marilyn

Hey folks maybe you already know about this ..but if you don't here goes ......

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The second in a pair of unconventionally curvy condos in downtown Mississauga, called the Absolute World towers (or more colloquially the Marilyn Towers), has been unveiled. The newer of the towers, called Absolute World 2, will be 50 storeys compared to the 56 storeys of Absolute World 1.

The design for both, by Yansong Ma of Beijing-based MAD Architectural Design Studio, was chosen out of 92 submissions from 70 countries in a contest held by Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes, the developers of the site. Competitors in the project were asked to design a residential tower that would leave an architectural stamp on downtown Mississauga.

Ma proposed a uniquely gendered style to each tower, “a version of Yin and Yang,” says Danny Salvatore, president of Fernbrook Homes, “While the first tower captures the feminine, the second tower will be its counterpart, still lithe and romantic in its silhouette but more rugged and perhaps more robust.”

Both towers will be built at the same time with construction beginning in spring 2007. The towers will include similar features such as wraparound balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, a common terrace and a 30,000-sq.-ft. recreational facility.

“There is a synergy between them, an aura which transcends each of the individual buildings to create a totally unique and original urban space,” says Ma, commenting on his design. “My work has always tried to develop something more organic, more close to nature.”

This is old news but great news. Toronto's suburbs make up the vast majority of the land area of metro yet for the most part achitecture is completely and painfully convensional. - ice

two beautiful additions to the skyline... nice going mississauga.

i really, really do hope that the city can carve out some sort of non-car dependent, pedestrian friendly area around square one with all of these condo developments and rumours of light rail. it would be a shame if all of this added density lead to nothing but more cars and wider roads...

Architectural sleight of hand at it's best (exaggerated by renderings of course).

One of my favourite moments of this past summer was when I predicted to the architect of Home Depots and Sapphire Tower (yes it's true) how the Marilyn would be pulled off.

"It's all in the balconies" I guessed. One central core and a bunch of rotating, expanding and contracting balcony floorplans.

No load bearing issues at all.

And i was right. The architect has since invited me to drop by and take a turn at chipping away some of the foam that is the in-progress Sapphire model/massing/shadow creature. Apparently anyone can chip a piece off.

;-)

^no wonder Sapphire is now so short

Eventhough it is 'all in the balconies', they still are impressive buildings for a market that averages around $250 a square foot

Nice but a shame they’ll be in the middle of the 905 and not somewhere more prominent.

This project is, unfortunately, designed for suburbia and there are issues with its design in its actual location, let alone more urban places like Toronto and Hamilton.

Neat. I agree, it'd be nicer to have it in a more prominent location.
