Anyone notice the use of the name, "Cleveland" in hollywood?"

It always seems to play the city version of "John Doe." If a script in hollywood ever read, "[random city name here]", I bet most directors would choose Cleveland.

Usually, it's like this::

I have a to fly to Cleveland for a business trop in January.



Mary

I have also noticed the abundant use of Cleveland in movies as the generic, humorous destination. It often takes the tone of "I would be there for the party, but I'm stuck in Cleveland."

I think there are a lot of screenwriters from the Midwest. A writer from Ohio might throw Cleveland into a script in a benign way as a "plug", whereas somebody from Michigan or Indiana or Illinois might throw it in as a punchline.

Similarly writers from the Northeast will use Jersey as a punchline (or benignly if they're from there) whereas West Coast writers like to pick on Bakersfield, Spokane and Boise.

But, like I said, I think there's an abundance of Midwest screenwriters out here and Cleveland is kind of their catch-all.

Sorry guys, I think that Chicago is used much more, when a midwestern city is needed. Actually I think the writers out here try and mix it up and most cities have been used, MAry TYler Moore-Minneapolis; Family Ties-Columbus; Married with Children-Chicago; ER-Chicago, etc. I'm blanking on a series set in Cleveland at the moment, but I'm sure there is one out there.

youre talking about settings... this thread is about random mentions of a city... nothing is ever set in Cleveland... but its name is tossed about frequently in movies as sort of a stock midwestern city

Are you asking this now because of the T-Mobile commercial they play every 5 minutes with the family at the dinner table? The father says he's gonna call his parents he hasn't called in years because long distance is too expensive and now it's not with T-Mobile. Then the kids say "i thought you said grandma and grandpa were in a better place?" and the dad says "Nawww...they're in Cleveland".
