Flames and Panthers to play in Saskatoon

The Calgary Flames will host the Florida Panthers in an N.H.L. pre-season contest on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, 7:05 p.m., at Credit Union Centre. It'll be the first N.H.L. game in Saskatoon since Winnipeg and Edmonton played a pre-season game on September 18, 1994. Flames and Saskatoon Blades' season ticket holders have first shot at purchasing tickets, between now and Saturday before they go on sale to the general public next Tuesday through Ticketmaster. Prices will range between $15.00 and $50.00. Net proceeds from the game will benefit the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association and the Blades' Education Fund.

I am curious as to what people who live in NHL cities think about this? Do you feel like sharing? BTW, thanks Calgary, finally something in return for all those people we keep sending you.... Should be a great time at the CUC.

This is good for Saskatoon to show that they support the NHL. I'm sure it will be a sellout. And who knows; maybe down the line when all the soon-to-be folded Southern American teams start looking for new locations, you guys can say "look, we have sell out crowds. We love the NHL", and before you know it, they will be knocking at your door.

Awesome news, too bad it's Florida though... Would have been more interesting had it been another Canadian team, or at least an Original Six perhaps.

The NHL needs to bring back the neutral site games from the past. At least those were regular season games.

I think it would be good if the NHL went under and they stopped showing hockey on TV.

They could replace it with Oprah and Dr. Phil reruns.

I think there should be three *regular season* games in winnipeg per year. With six Canadian teams, these three games would cover each of them once. From the six teams' perspective, it would only hit them once in the entire year, and at the same time, it divides up the travel required for each of the teams.

We all know Winnipeg would sell out many times over.

Regarding the other smaller places like Saskatoon, pre-season is sufficient (and I'm happy about this).

Why does Winnipeg deserve games but Saskatoon doesn't?

I guarentee you a game would sell out in Regina or Saskatoon.

What is the seating capacity in Regina's agridome? 5-10K? If that's the case, then Lethbridge would qualify for games aswell too.

Logical yes, but as stated the Agridome in Regina only seates 7,000 - a small crowd for an NHL game IMO. Although tickets for the game in Saskatoon priced at 15 - 50 dollars indicates a huge profit is not the priority.

It's about trying to sell your product in that market. If you win over a bunch of fans in that market by giving them a connection to the team they might buy your merchandise or boost your TV ratings.

Do people in Saskatoon or Regina have any particular allegiance to a certain team?

I think it's funny how Edmonton became Winnipeg's default home team. Afterall, they were our sworn arch nemisis back in the day. I still can't bring myself to like the Oilers. Although I do admire Edmonton's blue collar work ethic.

I've been here 4 years and haven't been able to figure that one out, but I tend to think the answer is no. There seems to be a lot of Red Wing fans among the grey hair set, thanks no doubt to Gordie Howe, but they are slowly dying off. When the both Edmonton and Calgary made their finals runs over the last couple of years there was a lot of those annoying car flags but otherwise I don't think any one team noticeably stands out as the local favorite.

Lots of those car flags here too. I never noticed anyone with them when I lived in Montreal.

Good on Sask. to get a game. Should be fun times.
