Out to near the Henday but still walkable from the LRT would be ideal methinks.

I'd like to see closer to the Yellowhead, maybe on the north end of the Muni lands and tied into a VIA station with an LRT connection.

If Greyhound moves, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Red Arrow take over the terminal. They appear to be outgrowing their location at the Holiday Inn Express on 104 St. In any case, the Grand Hotel is a bigger riff-raff magnet than the bus terminal.

^^^ As we have seen with VIA, it is unfortunate to have those kind of stations that far/disconnected from downtown. I'd hope greyhound remains central... but let's get rid of that terminal...

^ Central would be nice, but this statement:

Quote:

is incorrect... most of the problems in the area stem from the Greyhound, not the Grand. I should hope the plan is not to push the statino over to the north edge or the "quarters" district.. that would be doing the areas a huge disservice

Greyhound should remain downtown. It would be unfortunate if it moved. There is no reason why the station and terminal cant be incorporated into a new development on that site. We cant move all the untidy industry and employment centers out of downtown, functioning cities need transportation connections like bus depots. It cant all be wine bars are coffee shops.

That area will clean up as the street rats get diluted with new residents and arena traffic.

I pray for the day that the grand turns into a bar that drips of culture and history and attracts every segment of the population like the commie or Strat. it would be a welcome addition to the hudsonsOJbrewhousePintPublicHouse lameness.

Sounds like the next round of renderings are going to be a bit departure from what we have seen thus far in a good way.

May 15 is EDC (unless they ask for an extension).

May 16 is Council Update

DECL has Rick Daviss updating them on the 15th at our AGM as well.

Keeping the glass, metal and sexy curves I'm hoping....

Regardless... preparing to be disappointed. I was a huge fan of the leaked images.

New source of gaming revenue could fund Edmonton arena
May 8, 2012

Betting on single pro games, which will soon be legal in Canada, should help fund major pro sports venues

There’s a rare moment of opportunity for Premier Alison Redford on the Edmonton arena file.

In essence, Redford has the opportunity to shift tens of millions of dollars away from organized crime and off-shore betting sites towards the construction of major, government-owned sports facilities.

How so? Redford would take two excellent new ideas related to gambling and government revenues — one from Wildrose leaders Danielle Smith, the other from federal Conservative MP Joe Comartin of Windsor — and combine them, creating a gambling venture based on betting on single pro sports matches, mainly NHL games.

Proceeds from this gaming – and the profits should be in the hundreds of millions each year for provincial government across Canada – could then go into a provincial fund to build major sports venues, such as new arenas and other major facilities.

The plan is picking up steam at Edmonton city hall with people like Coun. Kim Krushell.

“This is something that should be definitely looked at,” Krushell says. “I like it because it’s like user pay. If people are going to go bet (on single hockey and football games), and they’re doing it anyway, I’d rather that at least the government is getting a piece of it.”

Using gaming revenue to fund new arenas has always made perfect sense to me.

City wants new arena to be a good neighbour

Tack on another $82M for items related to Edmonton arena: report

BY GORDON KENT, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM MAY 11, 2012

EDMONTON — An advisory committee should be created to look at the community benefits from a downtown arena, which could include construction jobs for low-income Edmontonians, a new report says.

The community benefits, part of an arena deal now being negotiated with Oilers owner Daryl Katz, might also feature outreach programs for youth and families living nearby, the city report says.

One of the committee’s roles might be setting up a “good neighbour policy” to deal with parking, noise and other arena issues.

“Some of the comments we got back in the first round of (public discussions) were ‘don’t give us a room in the arena and say you have looked after the community,’ ” project executive director Rick Daviss said Thursday.

Surprises in new downtown arena update 8am
Click here to email Ed Mason
5/16/2012

Looks like there will be a couple of surprises when City Council gets an update on the downtown arena today.

630 CHED News has learned the Mayor and City Councillors will be shown new, previously unseen images of the proposed downtown arena. but wait...there's more. The meeting will also get a sneak peek at new animation of what the arena will look like.

Much of the rest of the information on the arena has been heard before but council will get an update on various events in the timeline.

Looks pretty impressive so far.

Figuring the price tag may be a little on the high side. We'll see when bids come in.

Almost guaranteed this one is going to bid packages, so they can control how much gets built or cut (IE.. community rink will be the first casualty I am sure)
