PSU's architecture department tried to use it as their temporary location while Shattuck was being renovated, but PSU said no because it was too far from the campus. It would of been so cool to use that building for a few years as an architecture school.

Hopefully something worthwhile will go in that building. I really wish the hotel idea made it through because that building would of made such a unique hotel to stay at.

City of Portland soon to own 'Made in Oregon' sign
By Janie Har, The Oregonian
March 23, 2010, 12:02PM

The iconic and occasionally problematic “Made in Oregon” sign at the west end of the Burnside Bridge will be changed to read “Portland, Oregon” before the city takes ownership. The copy change request goes before the Design Commission in May, with the change to occur this summer.

Ramsay Signs will donate the actual sign and the city, according to Leonard’s blog, will pay to light the sign with money from a new parking lot under the Burnside Bridge.

shame they will be changing what it says, but good that the city will finally own this landmark. It makes sense for the city to own it.

If a westside couplet ever comes to fruition it will be pretty attractive in the Old town area along Couch.

Hello,

Uwajimaya has signed a Letter of Intent to Lease ground floor space in the mixed use project that Sockeye Development is hoping to start construction in May of 2012, with the grocery store opening February of 2014. This timeline is tentative and depends on the developer securing private and public financing. PDC hopes to have a determination on its level of funding into the project by the end of this year.

The link is to a concept study Sockeye had done for a two block redevelopment with the Uwajimaya project proceeding first. http://www.pdc.us/ura/dtwf/block32-33.asp

If you have further questions, you should email Peter Englander as he is the project manager and I will no longer be at PDC after June 30.

That is the closest thing I have seen to a set date. I wish it was sooner, but beggers can't be choosers. All my favorite hangouts are within Old Town, so I really would like to see this progress.

I think part of the problem is the requirement for 2 blocks. The block closest to burnside is filling up with retails and really is in no way in need up re-development. If the PDC would just isolate the one block for the Uwajimaya building, I'm sure the development could be sped up. Keep it simple.

Uwajimaya closer to building Old Town store
POSTED: Friday, July 2, 2010 at 01:38 PM PT

Tags: Sockeye Development, Uwajimaya

Representatives of Uwajimaya, the Asian grocer headquartered in Seattle, signed a letter of intent today with the Portland-based Sockeye Development to put a store in Portland’s Old Town.

The store, which will be located on an entire block bordered by Northwest 4th and 5th avenues, Couch and Davis streets, will be the second Uwajimaya in Oregon.

The letter of intent gives the Portland Development Commission six months to come up with the public investment required for the project. The PDC will have to come up with close to $10 million in funding for it. The project, which has been in the works for more than two years, was estimated last year at $80 million.

In addition to the street level specialty grocer, Sockeye Development has proposed adding more than 100 housing units above the store.

Here's a demolition to get excited about!

I thought the OCOM project might be dead in the water thanks to the economy, but maybe not?

Old Town building to be demolished

The Portland Development Commission announced today it is seeking bids for the demolition of the former Oregon Mountain Community building on Block 8 in Old Town.

The PDC-owned building sits on the same block as the former Globe Hotel Building, which is the future home of the Oregon Oriental College of Medicine.

The building, located at 1 N.W. Couch St., was most recently home of Oregon Mountain Community, an outdoor retail store, before the company moved to the Hollywood District in 2004. Brad Malsin, principal with Beam Development, said the demolition will allow for the renovation of the Globe Hotel Building and will open the site for future redevelopment.

“We are exploring some options for the site, but it is too early to know exactly what we will do with it,” Malsin said.

SD Deacon, the general contractor on the Globe Hotel Building renovation, is expected to get to work on the building sometime next month.

And a demolition not to get excited about:

Portland’s Satyricon club to be demolished

A downtown Portland music club may soon be torn down to make way for a new homeless shelter.

The Satyricon, a music club famous for hosting early performances of famous bands such as Nirvana and Elliott Smith, plans to close its doors for good in October. The club had previously closed in 2003 and reopened in 2006.

The nonprofit MacDonald Center, which has purchased a building at 125 N.W. 6th Ave., plans to demolish it, according to Drina Simons, development director with the MacDonald Center. The nonprofit plans to build a new shelter for the homeless the lot.

No demolition notices have been filed yet for the project, according to the city of Portland’s public notice website. The MacDonald Center is currently located in a building located next door to Satyricon at 605 N.W. Couch St.

For better or worse it appears Old Town will be housing (ironic term, I know) the homeless population for the long run.

Housing and parking lots. Satyricons gets torn down while across the street a surface parking lot sits empty.

satyricon is one of those haunts that help push the alternate music scene in Portland - too bad, but the building was in pretty bad shape. I agree with you CAB, why tear a building down when there are empty lots all over the place. The city must own one or two them around town that they could entice development on, but I suspect it is really a money opportunity for the owners of Satyricon rather than good urban planning
