Portland, OR, SNOW DAY! 7 pics.

The news weather was wrong yet again (calling for a dusting), and we got snow, about 4" in a town that is usually unprepared for it. There is a video on the local news of an idiot driver that should make national news, the guy takes out cars and walls and poles.

Usually Portland gets an inch or two of heavy wet snow that melts by noon. But this was different, very "East Coast" drier and compact snow that is sticking and it is cold out. No slush here.
The city is pretty much shut down, no school, many business closed, busses were not running much for the AM commute, the freeways are pretty much shut down. Amazing what 4" can do here.

Most of these were taken in the last hour:

Laurelhurst Park, or should I say, Laurelhurst "terrain" Park
Conditions 4-5" packed powder, no lifts, but all runs open

The two busiest streets in SE Portland
Burnside, usually 4 lanes of heavy traffic into town, pretty deserted, and with a spinout.

39th, the main N-S route, usually 4 lanes of cars and busses, deserted

Just sit and enjoy the spectacle:

Kids off from school and parents off work, snow day crowds in the park:

Some of the nicer neighborhood homes:

It had me laughing pretty hard, it is as if the guy way trying too hard to do as much damage to him/herself and others as possible, you hear him actually acclerating on the ice.

Seems fun was had by all.
You guys can keep going, but I think I've gotten fix for actually being in the stuff, as far as having to go to work in it. Some skiing would be fun though.

Lived here for 7 years, so I knew what I was getting into. But, at last, I may be able to at least afford a house.

I am also glad that I can work at home, too, and not try to drive in this.

this was on that news link, in an article talking about how many more people are taking public transit with the snow and all... or "creative" transit.

Be sure to check out the Reed College campus (my alma mater) after a snow. Beautiful.

Incidentally, east coast snow is wet and heavy. If you want light fluffy just-push-it-off-your-windshield snow, you want the rockies and parts east (like Calgary).

I went to school in Upstate NY, this storm really reminded me of that sort of snow.
