August 16, 2012 - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador

This is where the Deacon Building, the Fortis Building, and 351 Water Street are all being constructed at the extreme west end of downtown St. John's:

This is Pleasantville, a former American military base that is slowly being taken over by condos and homes:

In the background you can see the sprawling campus of the Memorial University of Newfoundland (the largest Canadian university east of Quebec City). New residences are being constructed:

And a re-clad site. This is the TD Building on Water Street in downtown St. John's. Apparently, and I don't know this for certain, the finished product will resemble the grey brick building immediately to the TD Building's left.

Seems like a big campus indeed. I'd say it's the largest university east of Quebec City though.

I just checked to confirm and you're right. Laval is in QC and has almost twice the student population of Memorial.

I'll edit my original post!

Just to make it more clear than "AK Museum" (unfortunately there is not an Avtomat Kalashnikova museum in Toronto), that is the Aga Khan Museum, dedicated to the preservation of Muslim arts and culture. The complex also includes the Ismaili Centre, and is being built near the Don Valley and Eglinton.

Seriously amazing pic dude. Imagine this view next year or even in 2015 when the Deacon Tower is done. St. John's is changing mighty quick!

And the best part is we're not losing much heritage that wasn't already lost. Most of these building sites have been untended green space for years. And the west end of Water Street I'm willing to let go because it's already separated from the main heritage area. Even if we do get UNESCO status, it wouldn't be included.

For example, red is the Deacon site, blue is the Fortis site:

Are the shark pools going to be under the glass floor area of the CN Tower? That would be fun if they were.

I am unreasonably excited about this aquarium. I've always loved aquariums but have had to travel long distances in order to visit one.

And like any good superlative-loving Torontonian, I feel compelled to mention that it will feature the longest underwater walkway in the world.... IN THE WORLD! Stuff that in your pipe and smoke it, Atlanta!

Progress on the Hilton Hotel, Condo building and demolition of the former School Board, making way for the new McMaster Campus. Soon there will be three cranes.

Caltrane, I believe there is a 35 something story high condo tower U/C to the left of this picture. If you happen to walk by there it'd appreciated if you could take a shot of it!

Here is the new South West Detention Centre that is replacing Windsor's current jail which was built in 1926.

The new Windsor Star building that is taking over the old Palace theatre downtown. They've gutted the building and are recladding it.
