cross Canada stopovers.

Alright guys, Cassius and I are gearing up to ride our bikes from Toronto to Vancouver this June (late June) to raise money for The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. I’ve already set out a rough route with destination points. Obviously the longer stretches will be from north western Ontario through to Calgary where after the terrain will dictate shorter daily distances. Generally through Ontario, Eastern Manitoba, western Alberta and B.C towns and destination points are more frequent, the problem I’m having is finding overnight stops in between. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I need name of campgrounds, motels, whatever along the way. This itinerary is not set in stone, and yes we plan on stopping along the way.

ps- I'm trying to ad more km to Northern Ontario to remove 100km from B.C.

Thanks all in advance.

OK, I just spent 20 minutes on a post here and got logged out so I'll send you a message about places (motels and campgrounds) in the area above.

On Day 16, I'd advise only going as far as Medicine Hat or Redcliff, as Ralston is a military base town with no facilities for civilians.

On Day 19, you could probably go further than Lake Louise - maybe Field, BC? The route between Banff and Lake Louise isn't difficult terrain at all - you'd have no troubles going further than 60km on that day, especially since the only big hills on the route between Banff and the B.C. border are downhill heading west.

Ah cool, that's what that is, I was trying to figure out what was up with the strange circular pattern in the satellite map.

Very cool.

ALthough I agree with Feepa , Day 20 to Revelstoke will be one hell of a bike ride. While ive only driven it, Id think youd have to split that into 2 days

Keep in mind the prevailing winds when you get in the praires are westerly, and will really wear you down - so be prepared to extend your days through there if the winds are kicking up.

Coming into Regina from the east will be somewhat of a nuissance. The east end is somewhat hectic. I do suggest that you bike through Wascana Park on your venture through the Queen City.

Umm... On Day 7/8, stay in Nipigon instead. Dorion is just a shack. Unless you're sleeping outside, good luck passing a night there. If you're willing to go another 20km, there is a hostel outside Wild Goose, you might be able to stay there? Or you could go straight into the city, there is a hotel right on the intersection where you turn off 11/17 to 102, if you need a hotel.

You should also check out Spruce Woods Provincial Park, just west of Brandon. Visit the sand dunes, devils punch bowl and the oxbow lake. It's a real treat!

Too bad you don't have more time to check out the best freshwater beaches in North America up around Lake Winnipeg (Grand Beach, Gimli, Winnipeg Beach, Victoria Beach, etc.)

So I take it by your triptik that the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun is still in service on Georgian Bay?

I travelled on it when I was a kid, and was facinated that they offered such ferry rides on freshwater lakes.

Sounds like a plan, and ya too bad won't have time to see the beaches in Manitoba, but from what I've seen online the beaches on Lake Superior are spectacular.

And yes the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun is still running and is the largest freshwater ferry in the world.

wok, I've been on all the roads in BC you posted, days 20, 22, and 23 are suicidal if you plan to go that far, on those roads. The grades, especially on day 23, are insane, you could never go fast that a walking pace up and down those hills. You literally go overtop of mountains rather than around them. I'd suggest going from Kamloops along the Frazer canyon, and skipping whistler.

If you are really bent on going to whistler, shave some distance off day 23 by going to Pemberton, or whatever town that is. Your almost there when you pass a sign that says your not allowed to grow potatoes. The actually town with hotels to stay in is just a few more miles up the road, have to go through an Indian reserve first.

Well I'm hoping we cover longer distances through portions of Ontario and west to the rockies. Would just like to play it by ear in B.C. And I need to go the Whistler route so I can stop by and see my sister for a few days.
