Galt is a very old town on the Grand River in Ontario. You won't find it on a map because Galt, along with Hespeler and Preston,
were combined to form the city of Cambridge in 1973. Cambridge is also part of the Kitchener-Waterloo metropolitan area.

You're absolutely right -- Galt looks to have one of the best-preserved collections of Georgian and Victorian stone buildings in the province. I'll have to pay it a visit during the summertime!

You can find towns with a similar aesthetic in Pennsylvania and upstate NY, maybe elsewhere.

I don't know how old Galt is. It's very old, as the town hall was built in 1857. It's an impressive town hall, so Galt must already have been a large town back then. Many of these buildings are from the mid 1800's. Here are some dates I saw:

first united church, 1863
knox's galt presbyterian(tall steeple) 1859
central presbyterian (tall steeple near bridge) 1880
Galt Public Library, 1903
Old Post Office, 1885
scott bulding (red brick), 1890
other red brick building, 1894
town hall, 1857

thanks. Wow, it's really no older than any other early settlements in Southern Ontario. I guess it's the stone and the fact that it probably hasn't changed much at all that gives it that extra older character.

Amazing.

You look at these buildings and marvel just how wealthy the society that built them was. Except it wasn't wealthy as we know the word. These buildings are artifacts from an era when architecture, building materials, and craftmanship were at their peak. Even better, the city hadn't been destroyed by the car. So, when you see a place like Galt, the contrast with our present civilization is both stark and sobering.
