Olympic countdown clock vandalized - For F**k sake

Olympic countdown clock vandalized
Monday, March 12 - 03:28:57 PM

John Ackermann
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Olympic Countdown Clock, outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, has been vandalized. The stone and wood clock monument has been spray-painted several times with the words "Free Betty".

That apparently refers to recently sentenced protestor Betty Krawczyk, who went to jail over her objection to road construction at Eagleridge Bluffs in West Vancouver. Vancouver Police at the scene say witnesses saw a man spray-painting the clock, before taking off south on Howe Street.

Police have recovered the spray paint can, and they'll be reviewing security video-tapes. The incident comes despite the promise of 24 hour security after the unveiling of the clock was marred by a violent protest.

I walked by the clock on Friday and I didn't see a security guard.

The protesters are harming their own cause far more than anything else.

would be so much easier just to get a cuple military goons stationed at 500 yards to shoot the bastards when they come along.

this is the single most retarded thing that could happen to the Vancouver Olympics. i mean honestly, if you don't support the games, why try and ruin it for the rest of us that do? like seriously, if you are going to waste as many words spray painting the olympic clock, why not do something constructive for your cause and write a letter to the Sun or Province.

that said, whoever stole the flag from city hall, good on ya mate! that was the only item me and my bud's didn't get duing our Vancouver Vacation scavenger hunt!

Well, at least it was vandalism with a political message, not just mindless tagging. This sounds like an environmental protest? Too bad the bugger couldn't have used a nearby wall instead, but of course that would have had less impact.

Three masked men - all members of a group called the Native Warrior Society - have claimed responsibility for stealing the City of Vancouver's Olympic flag.

Using an aerosol paint can that released methylene chloride into the atmosphere. Brilliant.

We might equivalently ask, if you support the games, why make the rest of the country pay for them?

I'm glad to live somewhere where you can dissent without being thrown in jail and tortured. While games-boosters might be blinded by ire over this kind of sacrilege (blindness implicit in supporting the games notwithstanding), Beijing's clock won't be vandalized because they would murder whoever did it and sell their organs (note: hyperbole). If you're trying to sell brand Canada, freedom and discourse will be a bigger seller than an undamaged clock.

They were protesting at about 5:30, when I went past on the B-Line. Big police presence, I could see them searching people's bags.

my answer for that is simple, these games not only showcase Vancouver as a city, but Canada as a country. why not promote Canada in a peaceful, enjoyable manner? if this is such a bad thing, stop paying your taxes. myself? i think the costs are beyond justified for the long term benefits.

look at it from this perspective, not only does Vancouver get a boost in the sporting world, but the infrastructure benefits from having an LRT line running to the airport (a first for Canada) will make the city more attractive, as well as accessable to international tourists. i for one, who enjoys staying downtown vancouver, but hates to spend money on taxi's and rental cars from the airport, happen to love this idea.

what the fuck? this is getting out of hand.

I think we need the honour guard from Buckingham Palace....only that they will be given armed rifles and will be permitted and to shoot and kill whoever attempts to vandalize the clock:
