Meet me in St. Louis

Last week I had to drive to Toledo, Ohio, a trip that ended up taking about 22.5 hours of on-road time, but I got to see a lot of new terrain and sites, and I took lots of photos along the way.

I'm gonna go ahead and post my St. Louis photos in a thread by itself so I don't have too many photos in one thread. We spent most of our short time there in Jefferson Park and around the Gateway Arch, so that's why most of the photos are of the Gateway. The first photo, with me standing at the base, gives you some idea of the scale, although you really can't have any real idea of how big it is until you stand next to it yourself. If you look at the fourth photo, you can see the windows at the top of the Arch. They look tiny from the ground, but they are actually about 4 feet wide and a foot tall.

Sorry to see you didn't make it past downtown, where the city's most impressive neighborhoods are.

Yeah I wish I could've taken more time there. We drove around a little after we left downtown, but didn't stop to take photos since we still had a lot of driving to do. However, STL got bumped way up the list of places I want to see more of.

I like 'em. Nice to see the city viewed from the river, looks impressive. The grit's a nice touch too. I remember going up in the Arch with my Mother and brother back in 1970. My friends back home didn't even know what Arch I was talking about (I guess it was fairly new back then). I probably couldn't fit in one of those little elevator things now.

Thanks for the pics.

you get the sense that downtown saint louis was just massacred in the 50s/60s.

Well, it's important to note that this building was hit by a tornado, or wind storm, at the end of last summer, and was , and still is , under renovation. The other rustic building is also under plans for renovation. The beems in that building are part of the renovation, and the windows being pulled out of the other building are part of its renovation.

Powell Square is part of a larger project that includes 4 high/mid rise buildings on the riverfront.

From what I saw, STL has several large abandoned warehouse structures that are just begging to be replaced or renovated. Some of them were pretty impressive looking, but I wondered if they were neglected beyond repair.

She was. Then she was raped in the seventies, savagely beaten in the eighties, and her ravished, bloody corpse was left for dead in the nineties.

Thankfully, many people have showered her with attention staring around 1999-2000, and the grand old dame is starting to shine again.

The photos were taken on a Wednesday, so most STL was at work. Besides, people just get in the way of my photos.
