On a slightly unrelated note, what is the name of the 4th tall building from the left in that render? You can't tell from the picture but its glassy and has a slightly flared top. I spent a few months in London and was always curious about that one.

I think you mean Citypoint. Formerly the headquarters of British Petroleum.

No. Basically, demolition (of the old building) and construction (of the new building) are happening simultaneously. The old core is being taken down, and the space around it is being prepared for the basement floors, piling, etc. It saves time I guess.

Indeed. Prior to 1999, the only skyscrapers in London were Tower 42 and Canary Wharf's main tower. In the last decade, a further 8 skyscrapers have been built, and between now and 2015 there could be a further 40 skyscrapers built (including two buildings over 950 ft).
Steelwork of the old building is completely gone; just the core remaining now. This should be gone by mid-September apparently. Then proper basement construction will follow. The new tower should finally begin rising in December/January. Photo by JohnB of SkyscraperCity -
I absolutely love this building. A favorite of mine, no doubt. All of the new building proposals in the City are simply stunning. Shard, Bishopsgate, I am jealous.
Does anyone know the anticipated cost to build this tower? Wjfox?

The old building utilized a rare type of structural engineering - it was "hung" from, and supported by, the top floor. If they had demolished the top floor first, the whole thing would have collapsed.

It's a shame English Heritage don't agree with you. These towers have faced incredible opposition.
