NEW YORK [53] More Lower East Side

Let's look at the details.

Is that a statue on the roof?

A beautiful autumn day!

NYC's Lower East Side is my favourite part of the city. Thanks for the pics.

Yes... it's Lenin!... atop the Red Square (luxury apartment building in a tenement neighborhood - somewhat of a social experiment by an NYU professor/developer when it was built back in the late 80s. It was supposed to represent the "danger" of living in a troubled neighborhood for wealthier residents). I lived a block south of this building for a short time and always found it strange... the clock's digits are mixed up and the hands never told the right time. Weird.

It's weird to see streets you walk down all the freaking time posted on here. The buildings themselves have no conscience to clear, but the people who live in the LES right now are largely paying too much for an imagined image and concept. The LES has become the place where people with money go to pretend they're roughing it. The actual people roughing it moved out to Brooklyn a long time ago! Still, it oozes history.

The ironic thing about the building is that the stores on the ground level are mostly chains, and I highly doubt it's rent-controlled.

Kind of like putting a PETA sticker on the back of your Jaguar with leather seats.

I don't really remember which streets I explored. I did a random walk and didn't mark down the exact route.

I know a lot of these buildings are very old now, but hopefully they will be around for many more years. Great pics HK.
