On the site of a currently abandoned paper mill, 'Le Canal', will feature several buildings ranging from 8 to 14 floors. A sales office is currently opened in the paper mill, which is to be demolished:

Solid projects all around. One trend is making itself clear lately: Lachine canal is exploding with condo projects, some tall some not, some nice some...not so much. Is Lachine Canal on its way of becoming the country's first waterway "canyon"?

Sherbrooke street is finally returning to its original status as an afflulent artery.

Thanks!

HAPPY FOURTH BIRTHDAY HALIFAX COMPILATION LIST!!!

In preperation of this event I have reformatted the list be a bit more interesting and quick to read.

Some new features are the colour coding system (see legend at top), ranking of height on a community basis (Peninsula, Mainland, ect), links to HRM Planning website (Case # underlined if available), and links to the project's website (last column underlined if available).

I have quoted only the "core" area projects to save space. Please see the first post in THE MAIN THREAD for a listing of all of the projects.

Crane listings are based on as accurate information as I can get (personal visits to sites). However cranes are moving almost weekly in Halifax now so some may be recorded inaccurately.

I welcome any feedback and would love to see similar lists for other cities across Canada if there are any active ones.

4 Additional Floors of Retail to be added to the busiest most retail intensive intersection in Canada

Atrium on Bay gets approval for 4 new retail floors

The Atrium on Bay is set to get a lot bigger.

Long the underappreciated younger sister of the Eaton Centre to its immediate south, the mall is set to add four floors of retail.

The owners, H&R Real Estate Income Trust, received community council approval for the project. H&R REIT also recently bought the Corus Quay building on the waterfront.

"It was largely supported by planning staff, as well as the downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area," says councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam. "There is going to be significant improvements to the street, a part of their application is really putting in almost three million to public realm improvements. They’re going to be internalizing the Dundas exit, the one that sits right in front of the Dundas and Yonge. So where you have those stairs leading up onto Dundas on the northwest corner will be removed. Which means we're going to recapture width. They're redesigning, repainting, re-landscaping Dundas, Bay, Edward as well as Yonge."

Writer: Bert Archer
Source: Kristyn Wong-Tam

Watch out Ginza, Shinjuku, and Times Square. ( hmmm. Saks Fifth Avenue? Nordstrom? Macy's? ...who knows who's getting that space. But it's gonna be huge)

I really love Toronto, but Dundas square is awful. Just plain awful. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon it by accident last year and ran the hell away like a couple of deers.

It really is simply awful.

If I walk home from work my route takes me right through it and there are almost no redeeming qualities. From the dozen or so religious nutjobs hassling me to the endless stream of panhandlers it's just a very unpleasant place to spend any amount of time let alone just walk through.

It is kind of funny because people used to go on about how Yonge and Dundas is a ripoff of Times Square, which is basically unpleasant in the same way. When I worked in the area a few years ago there was even a terrorist threat -- it turned out to be a bag of pants.

The maritime/quebec tourists aren't as authentic as the obese fanny packed midwesterners. Also, Joey's Eaton Center can't compare to Applebees.

That's true, the American tourists are much fatter. I've never been to Applebee's -- why the hell would you waste meal there if you are visiting New York?

This one is actually a re-cladding of an ugly building, so it's a win-win.

Assembled somewhere like suburban Atlanta, frozen, shipped nationwide. Oh, and tartar sauce is on everything!

Saddly, a lot of their customers in places like Time Square are filled with Canadians eating something they "can't get at home".

Great project though!

Looks like a mid-rise version of a mid-2000s Pinnacle development. Its not terrible, but I'll take our Freed/Streetcar/pretty much everything else stuff instead, thanks.

It looks like most Toronto designed projects. I thought it was a Toronto proposal for a second.

They've confirmed a start to the Nova Centre in Halifax. Excavation is going to begin before August 30. It'll take about 8 months to complete -- it's a very large site by Halifax standards and they'll have to go down quite far to accommodate parking and the convention space.

There are going to be around half a dozen major downtown construction sites this summer, which is a lot for a smaller city. The Citadel Hotel site is 3 towers at once and the plan for Nova Centre is to have 3 towers, although they might not all be built at once. Across the harbour there are 4 small towers under construction at King's Wharf.

Here's a banner that went up on the (very unattractive) site today:
