Greensboro's downtown greenway loop

Greensboro, NC is one of a few cities in the nation building a greenway that loops around its downtown. The first leg is already open.

funding approved for the northern leg of the greenway loop. This section will cost $3.5 million. The northern section will be wide and border the Greenway at Fisher Park Apartments and the Deep Root grocery store. There is also talk of building a mini park with a water feature on this leg of the greenway on land that use to have a gas station. Part of a road is being closed for this mini park. Part of the western loop opens this weekend and it includes LED sculptures, solar post lamps and interactive led color light panels under railroad trestles. Colorful patterns were painted on the columns that hold Freeman Mill Rd.

The greenway will border Greensboro College, five historic neighborhoods (College Hill, Fisher Park, Aycock, Southside & Ole Asheboro) as well as the South Elm/Lee Street project. The downtown greenway will also connect to all the other trails and greenways throughout the city. Future greenway amenities include a linear park, jr outdoor Olympic pool, other recreation facilities, water features, vegetation maze showcase areas for art and possibly a bike rental shop. The greenway is already sparking more development. a downtown apartment complex called the Greenway at Fisher Park is currently under construction. A planned grocery store near the greenway is in the works as well.

There were rumors this large green space could become a pond.
