Edmonton bashed big time

Courtesy of HFboards where the bashing never seems to stop against our city, and where uninformed people make us seem like the worst city in the world.

Tried to counteract some of those mis informed people... and this is what happens. Oh, by the way... our population is only 400,000.

I just took a quick look - not surprised to see Cannots fans are still ignorant scum. While I think scenic-wise Edmonton far from compares to Vancouver, it's also far from a dump. When you see people say "Edmonton has no culture, no nightlife, no beauty" then their opinion is pretty much worthless. There are better jobs and schools here, and although I haven't been to Vancouver, I feel comfortable in assuming their festival scene doesn't compare to ours.

I love how some of them said Edmontonians are "bitter" and have an inferiority complex towards Vancouver - what are we supposed to be jealous of? That they're least successful and most bandwagon sports town in the world? They can keep telling us to "stop living in the past", but the past never matters to those who haven't succeeded in it, and in Vancouver's case, that goes for the present too.

I'm also noticing that most of the inflammatory comments are posted by fans of teams the Oil schooled in '06. Seems like the rationale behind the less-than-brilliant commentary.

Vancouver residents seem to think that their city is the best in the world, pretty hilarious I think.

He's an interesting one for sure. I'm lucky I can figure out the majority of what he is talking about half of the time.

Who cares? There are a ton of people in there from Edmonton who seem to like the city as well.

I could tell you that if i was in my early twentys and making millions a year, Edmonton wouldn't really be up on my list of places to live either. Edmonton just doesn't have the establishment to serve a large amount of rich people, like other cities do. It's easily understandable why some players don't like it here.

The factors of the harsh climate and remoteness don't help either.

I hate that kind of mis-information. Calgary gets that kind of stuff too.

I lived in the states for a few years, and I visited quite a few of their cities.

The one thing that struck me is a similarly sized city in the US doesn't have as much to see or do as places like Edmonton or Calgary, and I'm guessing it's because Edmonton and Calgary are the fifth and sixth largest cities in our country, while comparably sized American cities are at least 30th down the list. They just don't have the same kind of clout. Alberta's two cities are both quite trendy and liveable when compared to a lot of other places, even some that are considerably larger than us.

Damn, Hootch, you seem to have a hard-on for hating Vancouver and the Canucks.
Hey, I can't help that my city attracts a lot of douche bags. Unfortunately, Vancouver falls in to the 'I moved there for the lifestyle' category and with that comes a lot of pretension. I'll fully admit that Edmonton has better, more well-rounded peeps. This is because it's filled with more locals who have an idea of the history of their city and are proud of it. I've always admired that. I imagine at some point Vancouver will get there when all these first generation Vancouverites (who moved from other parts of Canada) have kids.

Closest city is a 3 hours drive away. The next one is 7 hours away.

But the same could be said about Calgary.

What a joke...I moved to Ed almost 6yrs ago from Toronto and I will admit was a little afraid at first.I was surprised at just how great Edmonton is,its been my home for 5 yrs now and I have turned down job offers that would have taken me to Calgary,Vancouver and back to Toronto.Nothing against those cities, but Edmonton has been good to me.Remote?Maybe a little, but isnt that what makes this place great? No major hussle and busle and makes from some awesome outdoor activities in the summer and winter.I like that our population is 400,000,that comment made me laugh. You have got to remember that most of the ''guys'' on that website are under-educated 16-25 year olds.Should that hurt Edmonton's feelings?Nope...We know what we got,and those that matter know it too...

Some of them are comming from Europeans - some who I'd take a guess and say they couldn't pinpoint Denver or St. Louis on the map.

Remember, not that long ago in our history (50 years), well, it was. There was SFA north of us.

Our highways were not even close to what they are today. I remember a simple 2 lane Highway 16, gravel pretty much everywhere when you left town, and a city about 1/2 the size it is now. There was distance between Edmonton and St Albert, and flights were the only way to get anywhere fast. A lot has changed in the past 50 years, but the people who remember the city of the 3 B's are now old enough to be in positions of influence or media power, and ahve since moved away...with their only memories being the launch of Westmount Mall and the Twin Drive In.

So, the stigma persists. It is up to us to change it.

Some of those posts were pretty ignorant and consequently funny. Oddly enough a city like Denver is more remote than us. It's the largest city in a 600 mile radius, and is a good 500 miles from any other significantly sized cities (Kansas City and Salt Lake City are the closest AFAIK).
