Wow - great stuff - thanks.

I checked out Pullman for the first time about 2-1/2 years ago, though I was already familiar with its history. The area is smaller, more isolated & more run down than I'd anticipated, but fascinating nonetheless. I believe there is a cadre of dedicated Pullman buffs/historic homeowners down there who are buying & renovating some of the old worker cottages.

Did you notice if the central marketplace had been restored yet?

I love how this is all the way down at 112th street.... and yet it has density to rival neighborhoods on the edge of most major US cities' downtowns.

Woo-Hoo! I haven't been through there in about 15 years. Looks great. I had heard it was dangerous out there. Is it calm now?

1. Great pics!

2. Too bad it's not so liveable down there these days, right by Roseland which isn't the hottest neighborhood, not alot of retail options either. The best that can be said for the location is that it's right by the 115th/Kensington Metra station which is both an express/local stop with fairly frequent and quick (~25-40 minutes, express v. local) service to downtown. If I had extra cash I'd consider buying up some of the rowhomes to hold onto for a long while, since it obviously has the potential to be a magnificent neighborhood if 111th street and the market are redeveloped with retail and the crime situation stops spilling over from Roseland.

I wasn't given any trouble. We took the Metra down there, which (as Viva mentioned) is very convenient. The historic Pullman neighborhood itself seemed pretty quiet. There were a few people out and about and not much traffic. As you can see in the photos, some of the houses are very well kept (and many had beautiful landscaping) while others look like your everyday working class urban homes, but none looked to be "problem houses." On the way home, we walked along 115th Street to State to catch a bus to the Red Line at 95th/Dan Ryan. The area is gritty and urban, but it didn't feel unsafe.
