It's kinda cool that we get to keep the west side view of Houston unaltered, while filling out the whole skyline from the densest areas. Main Place and One Park will be a good balance for new additions.

A few photos I took earlier this afternoon of the ongoing demolition of the West Building.

I know many people hate this block because the West Bldg was a dump and attracted the homeless, but I get so frustrated that so many of the recent downtown projects have been built on occupied lots rather than on surface lots. We've torn quite a few things down in downtown since 2000. While the replacements are much nicer than what was there, it still seems a waste. The West Bldg and Montagu Hotel had potential to be turned into something great.

The Stowers Building right there is pretty nice and it was cleaned up not too long ago.

Will they plant the trees up on the breezeway deck?

Nice proposals.

Other than this one and the new parking garage across the street, what recent projects were built on occupied lots?

1500 Louisiana... no
1000 Main .... no
5 Houston Center... no
Hilton Americas ... no
Calpine Center ... not sure, but it surely wasn't anything significant
Houston Pavilions ... no
Toyota Center... again, not sure but there was nothing significant there.
New Civil Courthouse ... no

Kinda cool to see they're already promoting leasing opportunities for the building, as evidenced by this full-page ad from the most recent Houston Business Journal.

The New West building is now gone, and some of the smaller remaining structures are starting to come down...

The Montagu is the next to go. Implosion set for next weekend (1/20)

Worth noting in terms of possible tenants, from Nancy Sarnoff's weekly column...

Quote:
Developers of at least three new office towers planned for downtown said they'd start construction even if they hadn't leased any space first.

But one may have a leg up on its competition.

Industry sources said accounting firm KPMG is negotiating a lease for space in MainPlace, the 1 million-square-foot tower that Hines is building at the corner of Main and Walker.

Sources reported differing amounts of space the company would occupy: more than 100,000 square feet and 200,000 to 250,000 square feet. The sources didn't want their names used because the deal hasn't been announced.

KPMG is currently in Bank of America Center.

Hines wouldn't comment, and a KPMG spokeswoman said the company didn't have "anything to announce at this time regarding real estate in Houston."

It's great to see things moving along for this one. I absolutely love the lighting design on it. Can't wait to see this tower rise and be complete.

It needs to happen to help that whole side of Main Street.
