In fact I just did a search of the Olympics threads and honestly I cant remember where I posted it but it's there somewhere. I searched Sears posts but nothing came up and besides it's Saturday Night and I have plans so maybe I will be more thorough come Monday. But you are welcome to search for me until then Jlousa and besides...what do lawyers have to do with any of this?

I don't follow your join date is June 2011, how would you have posted it in the Olympic threads?

The reason some lawyers might be interested is because the understanding is the lease is nowhere near over.

The Sears lease isn't top secret or anything. It's registered on title so anyone with a little time on their hands and a BCOnline account can pull it up.

IIRC, it expires in 2049.

Sears will fall into receivership long before their lease expires.

This seems an example, as someone mentioned long back, about the eventual metamorphosis that the New Granville Mall would undergo. These are signs of such beginnings happening now

The downtown Sears building opened in 1972 under Eatons. If Sears goes through bankruptcy like Eatons did in 2001, what are the actual prospects for redevelopment?

The building is 40 years old now. In the next 5-10 years, where do you think the priority for Cadillac Fairview would be on the spectrum from renovation to demolition and redevelopment?

If the original lease to 2049 were bought out and it was just a choice for Cadillac Fairview of making the most out of the site for them.

if sears were to shut down in 6 months and it was announced nordstrom would take over, i wonder how long they would have to close down for renovations etc.? it would really deaden that stretch and make getting from robson to pac centre more of a chore some wouldn't want to do and bypass. I remember when eatons shut down there was a dead period and the one end of pac centre was quite dead

While Sears US is in trouble my understanding is Sears Canada is still profitable. The Downtown location is actually one of the more profitable Sears stores within Canada as well. Don't think Sears has any intention of leaving for as long as they can, the only real hope we have is that Sears US gets into deep enough trouble that it takes Sears Canada with it. Like what happened to Blockbuster.

i was asking a hypothetical - i know we will be stuck with sears till after i die unfortunately - just out of curiosity i wonder how long it would need to be shut down - i remember it was quite the dead zone when eatons shut down would hate to see that happen again for too long

I wouldn't be surprised if it would take a year to convert and renovate.

Unless Sears manages to offload it's lease to another company (if it's possible) I imagine that we'd see that block empty for probably 2-4yrs as the site would be redeveloped.

Next door to this, to the south, there is a proposal for a 41-storey tower:

Not me. Having lived near a co-op has been more than enough for me, let alone a shelter [of any stripes], thanks.

Only people with an open mind and an open heart.

Very nice attitude you got there; and how far are we into the 21st Century?

Cause God knows you'll catch it from all "those people" going in and out of next door. Let's say I own a condo there and it's listed. A potential buyer is turned off because of my condo's location? Then I'm glad. Because "those people" are dealing with enough in their lives let alone have a biggot for a neighbour.
