This was long overdue...

Finally updated my photos of Sydney...over 3 years later. These are from Sept 21.

First off, the contentious issue of the day, the Spanish Gates proposal. Here are the "historical surroundings" from standing on the proposed site.

Now the walkabout
Holy Angels Convent, northend George St

Executive Place, northend Charlotte St

St. Patrick's Church Museum, northend Esplanade

Commerce tower

Harbour Place, where downtown meets Northend

the site of Spanish Gates at the end of Dorchester St

A sad replacement for the original

More historicness across from Spanish Gates :ohno:

Finally something that actually is historic...surrounded by newness

Yacht Club

Some new development replacing an aging derelict building...recently finished (the pale brown one).

I think it's the only building that didn't get redone since my last thread

It's that season again

Those renovations make a huge difference. If a few of the brick ones were restored (presumably a lot more costly than putting up new siding) they would look very good. Downtown Sydney reminds me a bit of downtown Dartmouth. Both have some nice features but no particular focus and no really exceptional architecture like some other towns around the province. It's actually kind of surprising that Sydney doesn't have more.

Another interesting point to mention is that Sydney is almost a twin of Nanaimo, BC.

With the exception of the Northenders trying to quash anything that might block their "view", there hasn't really been a lot of focus on preserving the historic until recently. Just as long as they don't go all "Heritage Trust" on us, in our time of rebound, it shouldn't be too bad. There are some buildings I'd personally fight to save. This Spanish Gates fiasco has me worried that the Northenders are getting tips from the Heritage Trust in Halifax...they keep talking about neighbouring historic facades when the only building which could be considered historic on a neighbouring property is the Yacht Club (which has Delta on the other side).

Anyway, thanks for the input someone123.

PS- Congrats on getting moderator, this is the first time I've noticed it.
