Hartford usually makes me depressed for some reason, but I think you made it look really nice.

Travelers is marvelous.

I wished my city wasn't afraid of vibrant facade colors.

Nice photos. I've seen a few Hartford threads but I still don't have much of a sense of what the city is like. Supposedly it saw a lot of 60s-era urban renewal. Was the area that is now covered by a big interchange East of the downtown originally built up?

Not to dog the city but I didn't see much "urbanity" in Hartford. Mostly random triple-deckers and A-frame housing with urban prairies, parking lots, and Price Choppers grocery stores. There was one street I enjoyed (it was southwest of the downtown; Puerto Rican commercial district) but that was about it. It was as if Clayton, Missouri's downtown was placed in a Flint-esque city, in New England. That was my impression of Hartford, which can certainly change with a good tour by RICAN_PAPI!!! LOLZ!!!

It used to be very much so. I am a Connecticut native, so I cannot tell you to no end how much this city has cleaned up over the last decade. It is a totally different world from what it once was. Very safe, very trendy, very peaceful.

Hartford is not urban? Depends on where you are....
These pics are mainly from downtown, which is very built up, very corporate. Go east, west, south or north of downtown and you will see culture. The south end of Hartford you spoke of is the Park St. area. Very cultural, BUT, very crime ridden. Countless shootings and murders all summer for the second straight year. Hartford had a huge influx of jobs and skyscrapers in the late 70's and all the way into the late 80's. Unfortunately, most of the jobs were lost to suburbanization. Hartford has countered by now offering tons of inner city upscale living..aimed at the young execs.

The area you were looking at didn't exist some 20 years ago, and unfortunately there were no pictures of Front St. where the new Science Center is under construction. Right next door is a series of towers on the river as well as the Connecticut Convention Center and Mariott Hotel, all brand new and gorgeousss. They call Hartford New England's Rising Star, and for a while it seemed like a joke, but it really is coming along. Population has increased now after years of decline from 160,000 to 121,000, now up to about 126,000 and should be around 130,000 by the end of the decade. The metropolitan area surrounding Hartford has well over 1 million people, making it one of the largest metro areas in the US. Any questions regarding Hartford you can ask here or send to me, and I'd be happy to fill you in.
