^^ true to a point and it would be great.

^Indeed, but the assurance of a branded spot would attract many more people. We need to compete with the burbs on 2 fronts:

1. offering a different/unique experience ie indie places

2. offering a similar/consistent experience ie. brands

I think once the Arena gets moving you will see a number of big brand name eateries move in, Its time for the small indies to set up and claim their clientele now. I see now that places like Joeys, Cactus Club and Earls are in the more residential locations, the more commercial areas are more conducive to the smaller more independent experience.
Other than two places in St Albert my wife and I tend to spend our time at restaurants and pubs in the downtown.
But then I am the kind of guy that will go to a small club to see a band instead of an arena.

^amen brother, but go to the vibrant of any major city and you will see a much better mix attracting a much larger crowd, that is the goal. People love familiarity and consistency, brands provide that. Don't get me wrong though, I want a strong indie scene, but i'd like to see a couple more branded full service mid to mid upper places open in the CBD to drive some activity there that is somewhat lacking at the moment.

Awesome. How does it look? I am hoping for tons of potted plants, maybe some water fountains the portable ones that don't need plumbing - just top up with hose or pail. I hope the furniture is ok?

The patio at the Public House is bare-bones right now as it just opened last night, but I like the size of it. The furniture's mostly the kind of tables you see in O'Byrne's patio - mainly picnic tables, but there are also high tables with stools. There is a bar in the middle not unlike the one at MKT, except that there's no roof above it. But the bar's not finished yet. Nevertheless, quite a few people took advantage of the nice weather yesterday by going out into the patio.

Its a turn off - no matter how the food is. We would go if it was on Bourbon or near Henrys and Simons.
Althought it comes across as 'snobbish', I agree. Atmosphere, environment and initial perception matter a great deal in selling the complete experience.

Mmmmm... I LOVE being next door to Churchill Square. ToE for lunch every day.... today was Jamaican Patties from Irie Foods Carribbean Cuisine. Yummy... at least as good as Saffrons' on 118th.

A few of us wined & dined some out of town colleagues last night at 100... It was good... I don't think I'd go back for dinner though... and pretty pricey otherwise.

Funny... as on the other thread there's the same ol' Calgary/Edmonton talk.. our out of town guests from TO commented on how great Churchill Square was to be so busy, but most of the surrounding area was pretty dead.... exactly like Calgary dt.. Stephen Ave busy, the rest of it a ghost town. A lot of people seem to think otherwise.. but both our backwater burgs are pretty similar in most respects.

According to the website: "We have provided an up-scale sophisticated mature setting" . . .

but then they host a playboy party - sounds really sophisticated and mature to me.

Finally got to cafe tiramisu .... Most excellent. Best layout of a cafe I've seen in a while. Wine list could be bigger. But great cafe that I suggest .... Didn't have food but menu looked good.

Also enjoyed a glass of red in the hidden patio at the dish and runway spoon (a personal favorite patio of mine).

Taste of Edmonton - excellent as usual. Except three banannas cafe really needs to step it up. With that real estate in the square and 10,000 people outside - it was DEAD inside. Tey had waffles and pizza for their ticket participation. Which they didn't even seem interested in doing. Man... It's a license to print money this weekend - step . It. Up!!

Drift food truck pork belly sandwich wins. I need to visit the fenskis more... They sure got it down right.
