Well, that's Gehry for you. People either love him or hate him. There are no in-betweens. But you've got to admit - he always provokes a reaction.

I've always been a fan. My husband was not. When we saw this museum in person last summer, it was as if we had been struck by lightning! It really is quite spectacular!

Oh God, please no more Safdie. There way too much of his stuff in this town. Between the Gallery and the former City Hall, it's like having two of the same painting in one room. That tower looming over New Edinburg is such an eyesore too. I doubt they'll ever ask Safdie to do another building in this city.

I just pieced this together in the 10 mins I have left at work.. the metropole at Queen and Lyon

Scale is off and looks terrible, but imagine a tower at this corner (40 storeys or so...) it would have a nice effect, wouldn't it?

Wow.
Why can't they build something like that?

Strictly speaking, they did.

It's amazing how one building could balance out the skyline there. It would be a huge improvement.

I would like to see soemthing a little more different and striking than the typical boxes that are always built.

Something like the Al-Fattan towers of Dubai. One of those in Ottawa would definately be cool and striking...

What, you mean the Al-Fattan towers?

AL-FATTAN TOWERS

There are nicer towers out there in the world, but at least these have some shape to them!

Um, dude? The Feds don't build/commission ALL buildings in Ottawa.

What do you guys think about trolleys/streetcars/trams? I'm specifically considering them beyond the idea of Rapid Transit. Obviously the upfront costs make them seem like a bit of a luxury, but the idea is appealing to me. My candidates:
Richmond-Wellington-Somerset-Bank
Carling-Preston-Somerset-Bank

I think that some cross-route through the CBD-Dalhousie-Beechwood would be an interesting routing as well.

I don't think Richmond-Wellington is a good idea with the transitway so darn close. I would love to see something like that running N-S down Bank Street but where would we find the room for such a system?? Having something like that running from the CBD into the Market also sounds like a great idea, but how many people in the Beechwood area actually take public transit?

I'd like to rip up boul. Lucerne in Aylmer and turn it into a streetcar route (I believe it was once upon a time)

then it could dip underground at UQO and re-emerge at the Prince of wales bridge.. ah, to dream.

I too dreamed once, well maybe during the day in class while I was bored to death:

PS: I'm new to this image hosting and its annoying the hell out of me. I wanted to make it full size, but no.

PSPS: I know this will never happen unless Ottawa burns to the ground some night. Maybe the NCC is planning something...

Wow, I'm surprised how closely those routes match up to what I was considering.

If they did have trams, they would have to run down Bank,Sparks,Laurier and possibly Elgin.

Um, why?

In regards to Sparks St. though, there a was a plan floated around a little while ago where old-school streetcars would've run along Sparks St. all the way from LeBreton Flats to Elgin. Not what the status is, but business owners along Sparks St. endorsed it...

In the ''Sparks street revitalisation plan'' by the city of Ottawa they say a tram is a probable option!
I forget where I saw this...
