I have to say now that the building is complete, it looks much, much better than I imagined.

It think it really succeeds at where most London building failed in the past: color. I can understand the dilemma of trying to hold up to the color scheme of historic London. The result was always something "cute" and "tasteful". All other London buildings were saying "yes, we really know we're not New York City". Which is awful, since I believe London has the authority to go big and bold. That's why the shard works; if it was any other exterior texture/color, it wouldn't work.

Color was the last piece of the London skyline puzzle. Almost every building had re-cladding or paint jobs recently. And new building spend a lot of time and effort on exteriors and night time lighting. Where as in the 90's these were the LAST things you'd see. There was almost a complete neglect to this.

I thank culture change. England no longer associates itself with the dirty and toiled and needlessly stuck on stuffy tradition.

I think it was the London Eye that really changed attitudes there - people realised that modern materials could look graceful and elegant, and that the principal London landmarks didn't have to be historic buildings.

I was at the IWM today and I must say, it really does look fantastic from any and every angle.. I am partially jealous that we don't have it in Toronto but on the other hand it makes seeing it here in the context of the city even better.

They aren't close to eachother, but the LBT is taller and more alone so it'll look taller to most people.

The Bishopsgate tower although slightly shorter is built on higher land - a slight hill so will appear to be almost the same height as the Shard - however there are a lot of questions of funding and design - in the picture the Bishopsgate Tower would appear in the middle of the right hand cluster of towers, of course the tower we are getting excited about at the moment is the Leadenhall building which will be the tallest building in the middle of the right hand cluster until Bishopsgate is built) and is actually well under construction - but not yet visible.

I love the Shard - this building is what buildings should be like - capture the imagination of one that hasn’t seen it close up and dazzle the one that sees it!

I hope London has more Skyscrapers taller, yes taller than the Shard, but beautifully designed and aesthetically appealing like it. I want tourists to want to come to London to say I want to go to the building as people do to see the Petronas Tower, Shangahi World Financial Centre, Willis Tower, CN etc

I think a Shard 2 at 1500ft with a 300ft spire would be awesome!

Don't worry - people will come to London just to see the Shard.
Wait until the olympic games, that will be the best promotion for London and the Shard

I will visit London this year, after the OG's - hope it's as stunning as seen on photos!

I don't think the Shard will launch a building boom in London. England really only builds towers for special events. Which is a good thing, because I think the Shard shouldn't be out-competed... EVER.
