Probably paves the way for one to be opened up somewhere on King. (or in the vicinity)

Tim Hortons closing shop at Market Square

April 10, 2008
RECORD STAFF

KITCHENER

The Tim Hortons outlet in Market Square in downtown Kitchener will be closing in May after TDL Group Corp., the operators of the chain, decided not to renew the lease in the mall and office building managed by Cora Group Inc. at King and Frederick streets.

"That store is over 20 years old, and has limited space and resources for us to be able to provide our customers with the full product line that we would like to offer," said Len Graham, the franchisee.

Graham, who also runs the Tim Hortons franchise a few blocks away at Frederick and Lancaster streets, said there are no plans to open another Tim Hortons coffee shop in downtown Kitchener.

The 14 staff members at the Market Square outlet have been offered jobs at other Tim Hortons locations, he said.

John Vickery, leasing manager for Cora Group, said he was surprised and extremely disappointed that Tim Hortons decided to leave the mall.

He said Cora saw the busy Tim Hortons outlet as a viable business and had worked to negotiate an agreement.

Cora had an offer on the table to provide Tim Hortons with the extra space and ability to offer its full line of products, such as sandwiches, he said.

Cora was waiting for formal confirmation of the lease-renewal agreement and was surprised when Tim Hortons suddenly announced it would close the location instead, he said.

Vickery said the Cora Group is now "exploring every viable option" and making concerted efforts to either keep Tim Hortons in the mall or bring another coffee shop to the food court.

Rachel Douglas, a spokesperson for Tim Hortons head office, said the company doesn't comment on lease negotiations.

"We simply decided not to renew the lease at that location," she said.

So does this mean they'll be relocating elsewhere downtown? With the expansion and relocation of Shopper's Drug Mart, they've left an empty storefront at King and Queen. Hopefully we'll see another fast food retailer taking over Tim Horton's space.

According to this article, they have no intention of opening up another Tim Hortons in downtown Kitchener.

I thought the same way, but the article made me wonder.
I have a feeling there will be a new one somewhere, just not with the same franchisee (Len Graham)

I ran by the Kanmet site in Preston today. There were tractors digging up the ground, so something is definitely going on. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a development of townhouses and low-rise apartments in a mature neighborhood near downtown Preston, off Margaret street.

About time!

I forsee a school boundary readjustment in Preston's future; with this development going in, I don't think the Deer Ridge people can avoid sending their kids to Parkway instead of Preston Public for much longer.

I don't think there's enough opportunity for redevelopment in Preston to justify a new school or anything. Don't forget, many of the people buying into multifamily housing don't have children, and if they do, they're ususally very young. Preston is also an old area, with a declining demographic of children. Parkway is much closer to where the new homes are.

Preston Public is closer to the Kanmet development and is also bursting at the seams because the kids from Deer Ridge are bused there. Meanwhile, Parkway Public up in the projects (Preston Heights) is losing students and teachers. If Deer Ridge children went to Parkway instead (which makes more sense because it's closer), then both schools would have a balanced student body.

And to add to all this fun, kids from up in north Hespeler that are currently in Silverheights' catchment area might be bused to Ryerson under a proposed boundary change because Ryerson's even emptier. Heck of a long drive, but at least it keeps the place going. I'd rather see the Preston boundaries adjusted so Coronation or Grandview kids are sent to Ryerson, freeing up space at those schools, which are closer to the Silverheights area.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Does anyone know what's going up at Albert and Columbia? The house that's only a few years old is stripped for demolition.

1) Matter of Taste - Uptown Location, has it's Grand Opening April 25 & 26, 9am-4pm.

2) Cambridgite is about to experience withdrawal issues for a week:

3) easyhome is renovating too

4) Taste Of Mediterranean is opening up in the place of a former convenience store at 4 King Street East (King & Queen) Website: http://www.tasteofmediterranean.ca/

6) Former Uptown LCBO has been conditionally sold. Any rumours on what will happen here? When I first heard of the42, this was actually the location I first thought of.

WaterlooInvestor, am I remembering right that this is going to be in the mall as opposed to on the street?

I wonder how much work they are doing inside considering it's only closed for a week. Anyone hear anything?

I personally am really excited about this one. More great variety of food. I don't know of that many Mediterranean places around. Has anyone been to any of their other locations?

Adding to that -- Turkish Kitchen in downtown is closed for renovations too. Should be opening in a day or two according to their sign

Well it's good that there'll be one uptown, but there's still going to be a downtown location, right?

Nice! I knew that storefront had to get snatched up sooner or later. Sounds classy too!

What's up with all these renovations happening at once?

Yep, there will still be the downtown location for Matter of Taste. That would seriously suck if they left.

Reno's in preparation for summer perhaps?

Maybe, just maybe, all of these restaurants are realizing that downtown Kitchener is improving, and inorder to keep up, the restuarants should also be renovated.
The more money people invest downtown, the better it'll be, and these renovations are a great sign!

I totally agree. Not to mention, with the renovations and higher standards of existing establishments, comes high standards for new establishments (ie. Taste Of Mediterranean, etc.)
