Kolekole is awesome -- went hiking there twice, all along the ridge of the north Waianae Range to Mt. Ka'ala. It's an amazing place. On the flat top of Mt. Ka'ala there's a beautiful natural area reserve comprising a mountain bog surrounded by clouds nearly all year long.

I took a bunch pictures of the hike, which by the way, gives an awesome view of all of Oahu.

For a long time the height limit in downtown was 400 feet (about 120m). I believe the cap was raised a few years back to 500 feet (152m). The cap in Waikiki is still 350 feet, though a couple of buildings have been granted variances. The tallest building is still the First Hawaiian Bank tower which tops off at 430 feet. But that building is at least a decade old now. But overall, Hawaii has been pretty conservative about building heights.

Why? The question has to be asked, it is dense! so many skyscrapers. It seems like you should just lift the height restriction because it is already so dense

Girlfriend just got her assistantship stuff finalized at the university, so we'll be there in August (unless I end up in Baghdad, in which case I'll be there the following year, August 2009)!

And if anybody hs any job leads, let me know

I'm not picky... engineering, law, planning, whatever I can find. Land use law would be ideal.

Great pics! Honolulu is looking good although, I wish Capital Place wasn't so damn wide. BTW what building did you take the picture from across of Mckinley High?

As for height limits, there was talk about raising the height limits in parts of Honolulu last year but there was never a firm decision as to how high. Also the 1,000 friends of Hawaii are quite vocal about any talk of raising height limits and have been able to persuade people from allowing taller buildings in the past.

There has always been a vocal minority in Hawaii with a lot of power just as those against rail, the superferry, Go Airlines or change in general. Corruption at city and state levels runs fairly rampant as well--with shady campaign fundings and the "who you know" more than "what you know" game that's been a common hiring practice. I wish someone would just go in to Hawaii and clean house.

It was hard to get a good pic from there because the sun was in the way. I had to literally take the pictures for the pano aiming the lens thru my sunglasses (which upon reflection, may account for most of the stares), which is why the pano is kind of blurry and yellow tinged. I error corrected through most of the tint, but I couldn't get it to look quite right. Maybe I'll go back to the same place in the morning and get a better pano
