Walking in NYC (The West Village, Manhattan)

Let me invite you to see one of NYC most amazing places to live. The West Village. This area is actually part of a much bigger neighborhood called the Greenwich Village. But since the neighborhood is too big, I decided to just concentrate on anything west of 6th avenue, South of 14th Street (Minus the Meat Packing District) and North of Hudson Street. This neighborhood has also been a mecca for gays and artists. But lately it has become too expensive for the newer generation. There are tons of Boutique shops, restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

Well I hope you enjoy this neighborhood thru my photos. If you are ever visiting NYC, I highly recommend you take a stroll. Just don't get lost, since a lot of the streets tend to curved and run off the grid. Oh yeah and it was a very cold day when I took these photos.

Thanks for viewing my photos. And please leave me a comment.

West Village, Manhattan

The West Village is western portion of the Greenwich Village neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan. Though there are no defined boundaries, the area is usually defined as bounded by the Hudson River and either Sixth Avenue or Seventh Avenue, extending from 14th Street down to Houston Street. Bordering neighborhoods include Chelsea to the north, the Hudson Square section of SoHo to the south, and the core of Greenwich Village to the east.

A sub-neighborhood, the Far West Village, extends from the Hudson River to Hudson Street.

The neighborhood is distinguished by streets that are "off the grid" — set at an angle to the other streets in Manhattan — sometimes confusing both tourists and city residents alike.

Great tour. The street grid gets a little disorienting over there, especially when 4th Street intersects 12th Street. I have memories of being 15 and walking back to the Christopher Street PATH station with my mom, past all the storefronts with manequins in bondage gear and strap-ons.
You captured the feel of those narrow side streets well.

I didn't think one story buildings existed in that part of Manhattan.

Thanks for this most comprehensive tour of the west village.

Yes, an exterior shot of one of the houses on Leroy Street was used for the Cosby show. I believe in the show they lived in Brooklyn or some place.

That's not cobblestone. It looks like Belgian block.

Commerce St. is very nice. It's one of the streets that curves sharply mid-block. Number 61 I think.

Jularc -- these are beautiful photos of a great neighborhood. Thank you. Street scenes like this always make me miss NYC, though I like Denver very much.

I think it was this house that had/has a swing set in a small suburban type front yard -- located behind the wall to the left of the iron gate. Just another of those odd juxtapositions that make NYC unique.

I love a lot of the new modern buildings that have been built since I was last there... really lookin' great.

One final note, I belive the Cosby show was shot in Midwood, Brooklyn. Do you mean some exteriors were shot on the block in #70?

Thanks again for the photos -- great job .

edit -- Rufus beat me to the comment about the Cosby show. I think in the show they were supposed to be living in Ft. Greene, but if I am remebering correctly it was filmed on a soundstage in Midwood. I remember reading back in the 80's that Bill Cosby himself wanted the show shot in NYC and not in LA.

That little old house in picture#89, according to an old Time-Life book I have, was originally located on the Upper East Side. To avoid being razed it was put on a wheeled platform and moved to it's current location in 1967.

I only had a couple precious hours to wander the Village when I was there. Not nearly enough.
It was in the summer and it was so green with all the trees.
At sunset I wandered down this little street lined with sidewalk cafes, and it was so cool.

Thanks for the flashback. Every visit to NYC ends up having me wonder into this little nook of quaintness, and yet your photos still show areas I have overlooked.

Thanks for sharring.

Haha! This got me laughing pretty hard. I guess no gayborhood is complete without bondage gear and strap-ons prominently displayed in storefront windows.

LOVE the West Village! I ate at the Pennyfeathers shown in photo #9 when I was there last July. It was pretty good. I enjoyed my salmon there.
