From the Twin Cities thread:

Got me thinking about Metro areas and their nicknames. What are they?

Minneappolis-St. Paul - Twin Cities
Dallas - Metroplex
Chicago - Chicagoland
Miami - South Florida, Gold Coast
etc.

Miami is more commonly known as just South Florida, but also uses Gold Coast.

From wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Coast_(Florida)

Quote:
The name "Gold Coast" comes from the coins that occasionally wash up on the shore in the area. This is due to a large number of Spanish Galleons that sank off the coast carrying large amounts of gold and silver coins. However, the term is also used as a double entendre to indicate the fabulous wealth that has accrued in the area, especially near the coast (such as Miami Beach, Palm Beach, etc), including Donald Trump's $125 million estate. Used in that sense, the 'Gold Coast' wouldn't really include the entire 'South Florida' area, just that part east of U.S. 1 or, some would say, the Intracoastal Waterway.

Wilmington-Philadelphia-Camden-Trenton - "Delaware Valley"

Greater Philadelphia Region - "Tri State Area" (even though it is comprised of 4 states, PA NJ DE and MD.)

Northern DE, Salem Co NJ, Cecil Co. MD, and some of Chester Co, PA - "Greater Wilmington"

Houston- Space City and the older Bayou City are the big 'official' ones along with H-Town from modern hip-hop and other music. Many moons ago, before 1900, it started out as the Magnolia city which still appears now and then.
A moniker also used is the Energy Capital of the World or Oil Capital of the World/USA/ etc.

Ciao,
AWACS

Do they use 'metroplex' often in dallas? It's a stupid name.

Greater LA='the Southland' in local news or print; or "southern california" in advertisement. colloquially people refer to Greater LA as just "LA"

Riverside/San Bernardino metro="The Inland Empire"

You tend to hear the Seattle Metro area referred to as Greater Puget Sound or some other similar thing (Central Sound, etc.). The City is also referred to as the Emerald City - past nicknames include the Jet City and the Queen City.

Saint Louis:
Mound City because of the Cahokia Indian mounds in the area.
Bi-State because of the metro area is in two states.
Gateway City - gateway to the west

Chicago - Chicagoland
i'll never forget when a friend of mine from minnesota first moved to chicago and he asked me "what is this chicagoland place i've heard about on TV? is it some kind of amusement park or something?" when i told him that it was merely the name of the metropolitan chicago region, he was disappointed, and also commented on how silly he thought the name was. having lived here all my, "chicagoland" sounds completely normal to my ear, but i guess to outsiders it sounds a bit silly/strange.

i think part of the reason that "chicagoland" has become such a ubiquitous place name in the chicago region is because it helps reinforce the chasm between chicago and illinois, a chasm that both sides seem to enjoy.

Phoenix = Valley of the Sun .. however clunky that may be.
Most people just call it "the valley" when referred to as a whole and it is divided into "east valley" and "west valley".

But even before, Denver was called the Queen City of the Plains...not for what you may be thinking, but because its the largest city in an 8 state area...
