San Francisco's Mission District

San Francisco's Mission District - Part II
San Francisco from the 22nd floor - Civic Center and the Tenderloin
Salton Sea Beach, CA: Un-Urban Decay

The Mission District is one of the oldest areas of the city, having survived the 1906 earthquake and fire largely intact. It's also home to the oldest building in SF, Mission Dolores, which was built by the Spanish in 1776. Originally an Irish neighborhood, in the 1940's through the 60's large numbers of Mexicans moved in, followed by many Central Americans from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and other countries. About 60,000 people live in the Mission, and prices are rising as sections (particularly Valencia Street Westwards) are gentrified, with large numbers of hipsters and yuppies moving in. The hood is still full of immigrants and working class families though, especially from Mission Street Eastwards. The Mission definitely has some of the most vibrant and gritty street scenes you can find in SF, and it supposedly has the highest concentration of street art and murals in the city. These pics were taken between December 2006 and February 2008:

Great street scene shots! You gave a true 'feel' for the neighborhood.

I live close to this area (The Castro) and go running through it each day. I will only go as far as Valencia since the neighborhood gets very sketchy after that.

Great pics - very vibrant colors!!

Nice pics.

As I mentioned in another thread, west coast standards must be higher. Going by the photos, for an area with such a bad reputation it could be considered an attraction if plopped down in some areas of inner city Detroit. Seriously, Motown needs some density.

Great photos! I enjoyed viewing them. Some of it looks a little more gritty than I prefer, but it also looks lively which is cool.

Nice pics. Interesting that SF's only remaining gun shop got several portraits. I also saw at least one parking lot that's about to become condos.

I suppose I wouldn't go running through the southeast Mission in running shorts either but I've been going there to eat and shop for a quarter century without any sort of problem.

i remember walking thru the mission as a kid with my dad and seeing some guy with his head all bloody and a shirt with a middle finger up that said fuck u

i believe its def gotten better/safer and now love the area. my friend now lives in the mission and he tells of the crack addicts that go by - every once in a while theyre a nuisance and he has to call the po-po, but ill take that over a bloody head

the street art is absolutely incredible
