What a dork.
I think he was just saying he heard it till then, not that it kept him up that late. Anyway, when you live in the inner city, there's going to be noise, that's just a fact of life, I don't get why people think it's going to be like the suburbs.

Matt Good looks like he put on a lot of weight since the last time I saw him, i thought that was kind of funny. And Gord Downie sang with City and Colour on Sleeping Sickness for the first time ever live. Once again, that was a great show.

To be fair, I often wonder at just how bad people's hearing is that we need it blasting out loud enough to be heard over a kilometer away.

But I've always found bar/concert music excessively loud. Now get off my lawn!

For Sale: 2 loor (field?) tickets to Monsters of Rock July 26th. The third of a set of three is mine and I'll be going as well. Price negotiable. PM me to discuss.

-----------------------------------------------

Missed V-Fest. Might have gone if I had been in town and could find some tickets. How was STP?

Furry had some thoughts on his blog. Everything I've hear is pretty simple:
"Effing awesome."

I just went to the shows at "Mewata Armouries." Did Shaw end its sponsorship of "Shaw Millennium Park"? Anyway, these were the outdoor concerts on Fri and Sat and it was mostly magic with a few qualifications- scheduling was impossibly tight and so, for example, Broken Social Scene had to cut their set at about 35-40 minutes which was a huge disappointment- also, on Saturday they allowed no re-entry, which was just ridiculous- no departing for a coffee when the show was so well-site in the west end (and near lots of places for coffee needless to say!)- but the programming was just superb. In fact this was my first time seeing Jane Vain and the Dark Matter and I'm listening to their CD right now. That sort of discovery is what Sled Island is all about.

Attendance was huge- the estimated 17,500 at all shows (and I heard about sold-out performances at 1AM) at all venues; the Mewata show was about 3500 on Sat and I'd guess less, maybe 2500 on Friday, so a lot more intimate than, say Folk Fest mainstage (10,000) or of course Virgin Fest, but to call Sled Island II a huge success is not an overstatement.

See Of Montreal if you ever get the chance, btw.

Apostle of Hustle did a show there too, right? Did anyone catch that one? Does their live performance live up to their albums?

I also went to the shows at Millenium Park on Friday and Saturday.

Of Montreal, Yo La Tengo and the ska band that played before Of Montreal were fantastic. I'd say Of Montreal put on one of the best performances I've seen in years.

It seemed reasonably well organized and except for the back-to-back band scheduling furrycanuck mentioned that caused Broken Social Scene to get cut short, I have no complaints.

Hopefully they sold enough tickets to the Friday and Saturday shows to have made it a profitable venture. I am looking forward to next year.

^^ Still, for a Festival that's only two years old it's hard to believe what they've managed to pull off. The problems with this year's festival were caused by having too much, and not to little, which is a good thing in the long run since it justifies expanding the festival even further.

I went to the Metric show last night at Flamescentral, my first time going to a concert there. I was pretty impressed with the venue, nice intimate atmosphere - better than Mac Hall IMO. Metric put on an outstanding show, Haines was on top form. The opening acts were the Wet Secrets(Which were damn good and had sweet marching band costumes) and Secret Broadcast(who put on a solid set as well).

BTW, mersar can you change this thread to Calgary concerts? (Just an idea)

Anyone here want to go to Monsters of Rock tomorrow but doesn't have a ticket? I'm going with frinkprof since he had an extra ticket, so mine is up for grabs. It's a single seat, second level of section N at McMahon. Concert starts at 11:30 with Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest headlining the event.

I'm offering this ticket free of charge to any forumer here.

Monsters of Rock was good. Unfortunately not a sellout, but it looked close. All things considered, Ozzy put on a great show. It was really well put together on a couple of fronts. Namely, there didn't seem to be many injuries, but if there was one, the paramedics seemed to be able to get through easily. Also, the rate at which they were able to get one band off stage and another on impressed me. Fairly seamless. It took awhile to get in at the start, and we therefore a lot of people missed some or all of the first act. I wish Judas Priest played a longer set, but I think I would say that even if they had played for 2 hours.

All in all, I thought it was good. The media has seemed to deem it a success, which I think is important for getting more of these sorts of events to McMahon Stadium and other venues in Calgary. In short, based on all the sound monitoring done, any noise complaints were pretty much unwarranted.

Didn't go to Pemberton.

Yep, MoR was great. I can't believe it was around 11 hours long, as it felt more like 4 or 5 really. Most complaints I've seen online rotate around two issues: the insane beer lines (not enough vendors), and the insane line to get in at the door (not enough entrances, started late, etc.).

The bands were awesome. The crowd was pretty good for the most part but could have been better. As frink said, it wasn't a sellout. And by the time Ozzy was rolling around, most people were pretty well exhausted from rocking out.

I was at Pemberton (friend won tickets). We had an absolute blast. Sam Roberts and Mstrkrft were highlights for me. I'd pay to go next year if it's still around.

Sam Roberts was the Thursday headliner at Folk Fest. He was okay. No campsite required.

Folk Fest in general was a mixed bag- boring predictable mainstage, amazingly fantastic side stages (there are six now) and workshops. Get to know Andrew Bird if you don't already. Also Calgary bands did themselves proud- saw concerts from The Consonant C, Woodpigeon, Beija Flor and Kris Demeanor, not to mention ex-Calgarians Kara Keith and Wendy McNeill and man do we have a fertile music scene here.

I heard a special on CKUA on friday that featured a band from Winnipeg called The Duhks, they sounded pretty cool. Were they ever on the mainstage out there? Or were they on one of the side stages? I'll definitely check them out in a couple of weeks at the Edmonton Folk Fest.
