I'd toss on Sam Roberts, just to up the Cancon if nothing else. Also someone semi-obscure-but-still-with-radio-hits like Switchfoot. Maybe Evermore, but no one I know's heard of them (all the better to really shake up a lineup). Now for the real reason I posted:

That website is just about the most insulting thing I've ever seen. If Branson does a festival in San Francisco, does the website have pictures of 2 men humping on it? If NYC, is it a bunch of fat hairy Italians screaming out the windows of their brownstones? If Winnipeg, is it a frost-covered mosquito?

Seriously, it is not possible to be more stereotypical, derogatory, and insulting to Calgary. Anyone who goes to that show should be ashamed.

Yes, I think it's THAT FUCKING BAD.

What do we expect? this is the image we portray to the world, we advertise ourselves as the stereotypical west. Calgary should be honored to have the V-fest here.

I have a very thin skin about the cowboy thing but really don't mind virgin's site for this- it is at "fort calgary" after all and seems a bit affectionate tongue in cheek.

Actually that line makes me depressed that we're not getting Stephen Malkmus...

But hey, FLAMING LIPS!!!
I always liked that line from 'Range Life' since STP never really appealled to me.

I am going to see Malkmus this summer at Sasquatch in Washington. As much as Pavement is my favourite band (as my user name would suggest), I'd even argue that his music is irrelevant now - certainly his last couple of solo works have been mediocre.

The Flaming Lips should be a good show and, probably, worth the price of admission.

How about Wilco?
Saw Wilco last summer at the Jubilee Auditorium. That was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. They are fantastic musicians!

I believe they still stream the Edmonton show from that tour on their website.

NIN would be sweet, i also agree that Radiohead would be an unbelivable concert.

I pretty much agree with the sentiment about the headliners, but the rest of the talent is pretty solid. I'm tempted to buy tickets to see Matt Good, Stars, New Pornographers and (Alberta's best band) Corb Lund. Hopefully Metric gets added to the Schedule.

A Daft punk show would be outstanding! My friend saw them with Kanye West in Australia and said it was the best show he's ever seen. MIA woould be good too, but she is playing at Mac Hall next month, so I doubt she would come back for V-fest.

I thought the web design was pretty cool, considering that when Branson was here to announce it he was driving a chuckwagon. They probably just chose a western theme for the first V-fest in Cowtown.

Radiohead
Tool
SOAD
Those would be my picks, would that ever be amazing.

I don't think the website is bad, it is at Fort Calgary and I'm sure lots of people believe we're proud of our western heritage.

Man, you Calgarians are awfully sensative. The Calgary Stampede is one of the defining events of the city. I don't see what's bad about that, or the Virgin Music Festival capitalizing on that.

If you guys could organize a festival with Radiohead, Daft Punk, Feist, Arcade Fire, Metric, Death Cab for Cutie, MSTRKRFT, Constantines, The New Pornographers, and Chemical Brothers (amongst others mentioned here), I'd be in Calgary in an instant. In the meantime, the line up looks pretty decent, though I agree that the headliners aren't spectacular.

Oh yeah. Radiohead definitely needs to come back. I've heard that they hold their last Calgary show in high regard, so I'm surprised that they haven't returned since they toured for OK Computer.

Except that this music festival has zero connection to the Stampede, unless I'm really missing something.

If they host it in Montreal, do they advertise it with pictures of the Bonhomme and bowls of poutine? If they host it in Halifax, do they show explosions, pictures of the Titanic, and lobsters everywhere?

I'm surprised some people can't tell fairly insulting caricature when they see it. I guess it's OK because it's Calgary.

Ah well, I'll just strap on my ten-gallon and go rustle me up some heifers.

At least we have a cool stereotype. (Not as rednecks but as a western cowboy city)

calgary viewed by outsiders is all about cowboys and horses and oil

nothing wrong with capitalizing on it

Ha! I was at that same show! I walked out on the Smashing Pumpkins. They were bore-ring. Catherine Wheel was the best band there that day
