Incredibly old conspiracy theory, and I'm at a loss as to why it would be of any interest here.

If the mods closed a "hot cars in our cities" thread, this one sure as hell better not stay open.

PS: for anyone that thinks I'm kidding, this story is all about the US's master plan to take over Canada and Mexico, as evidenced by plans to build a superhighway linking the NAFTA region. Which has been in the planning stages for DECADES (anyone from Winnipeg will be quite familiar with the complete lack of progress on this one).

Anyway, the site is full of nutjobs just trying to peddle books to other nutjobs. It's almost violently jingoistic and borderline racist - they never quite come out and say it, but the "Chinese are evil" and "Mexicans are going to destory our country" memes just about ooze from the screen.

Mexico City and Acapulco are pretty much due south of Winnipeg; would be nice to have direct driving links to these cities for those who are up to the drive.

"Drive Winnipeg to Cancun and everwhere in between: one hell of a trip!"

I think these links are more interesting....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Global_Highway
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-American_Highway

and
http://www.canamex.org/index.asp

I think that the Canamex is one of the main reasons for Edmonton (and lesser extent - Calgary) getting ring roads.
I think this is one of the main reasons why the provincial goverment took over the Deerfoot in Calgary. These routes are to provide a major trade route from Canada down thru Mexico.
I'm not sure what the highway is like between Lethbridge and Montana.

It's a four lane expressway with two lanes through Milk River, but a bypass is being built around that town. Access is fairly limited. South of the border, of course, it's a full freeway (and a scenic one at that!). Back to Canamex, there are bypasses of Lethbridge, Fort MacLeod, Claresholm, and Nanton in the works, but the challenge is to improve the concept of "bypass" so as not to hurt these towns' local economies (better signage for businesses, highways running closer to services, etc). It's an excuse (any excuse is okay for me) to improve our main highways in the province. I just wish they'd take over Yellowhead Trail within Edmonton's limits...

Calgary didn't get the ring road because of the CANAMEX, we got the south Deerfoot extension.

The CANAMEX is supposed to not have traffic lights along its entire Alberta length now.

Agreed - what I meant by my "and lesser extent - Calgary" comment was that Calgary got their Ring Road because Edmonton got theirs and theirs probably came out of CANAMEX.

Is that the case now or the goal? I know they are talking about turning all of Hwy 2 into a limited access freeway but I hadn't heard they had gotten rid of the traffic lights. But if true that is great news!

The last light removed was one of the lights on Deerfoot in Calgary, in the SE. It has been the case for awhile now.

In Calgary, the lights are we gone, yes, but there are still lights in Claresholm, and a 50km/h Zone in Nanton, if not more.

I think if this is going to be built it should connect to the 401 and, you know, go to where the people are.

Or, have a spur to Thunder Bay. We could used the economic activity!

If the US is paying, I think Winnipeg should lobby for as many highway improvements as they can possibly get!

I do like how Edmonton is where the fork is in the Pan American Highway drawing...

everything is falling into place.

^Pan Am would be a nice roadtrip if gas prices weren't so high, eh? I've always wanted to drive to countries like Chile or Argentina (ski season there is just starting up right now!). There's something to be said for seeing the land from ground level as opposed to 30,000 ft above it.

Highway 2 north of Nanton has no traffic lights and is high speed, but that it is a small portion of the CANMEX Hwy in Alberta, and there still quite a number of traffic lights. Here's the summery:

Hwy 4 (US Border to Lethbridge) - never been on the highway, but there are still lights in Lethbridge

Hwy 3 (Lethbridge to Fort Macleod) - still the odd traffic signal in Lethbridge and 50 km/h through Fort Macleod, though both a Fort Macleod bypass and Lethbridge bypass are being studied by Alberta Transportation.

Hwy 2 (Fort Macleod to Edmonton) - as already mentioned, Clarsholm and Nanton

Hwy 216 (QE 2 to Hwy 16 in Edm) - brand new roadway to bypass Edmonton, but there's lights on it...brilliant

Hwy 16 (Edmonton to Hwy 43) - no lights and interchanges at most major intersections

Hwy 43 (Hwy 16 to BC Border) - still some 2 lane sections, a couple lights in Whitecourt though a bypass is proposed, slow down for Valleyview, and numerous lights in Grande Prairie though a bypass is being constructed.

Still a ways to go to eliminate lights on the entire CANAMEX. What I would like to see is the entire route renumbered as Highway 2 for a consistant number, similar to what happend with the Yellowhead Hwy approx 25 years ago.

I've thought this as well (a constant highway number) - makes sense to me.
Now lets get building those bypasses - It's rediculous slowing down to 50kmh from 110kmh through Nanton and Claresholm.
