REGINA - The City of Regina is moving ahead with a design concept for a new stadium - even though no land or funding have been secured.

The city concedes the province didn't meet a May 31 deadline the city set when it asked for $230 million in government funding.

And talks with Canadian Pacific Railway to buy land north of downtown aren't finished either.

But officials say staff will work on seating, concessions and washroom ideas for the stadium, which would become the new home of the CFL Saskatchewan Roughriders.

^ This line cracks me up

"The city concedes the province didn't meet a May 31 deadline the city set when it asked for $230 million in government funding."

So if the province (SK) gives them $230 million June 5th they won't take it!

Didn't they have a big even celebrating the last game in the old stadium at the end of the year last year? What an embarrassment for the team and city.

Yes, and next year, everyone in Winnipeg can be embarrassed when they have a brand new stadium. It really isn't a big deal.

Nice looking stadium there. Feels a bit small, but it should definitely do the trick.

What? That's ridiculous, this city sure does excel at making up stupid little rules.

Nice little stadium...15.000 seats?

Why not use McGill? Is it a scheduling thing?

Obviously there is a new stadium under construction which will be awesome, but when you say good-bye to the old one, then have to come back for another season it looks pretty stupid.

Either way, will still be great to have a whole new stadium in the CFL.

Yeah, it will be!

Weird how Calgary is one of the weathiest cities in North America and can't at least renovate their embarrassing stadium, let alone build a new one!

McMahon Stadium

There was a plan for a massive reno of McMahon back in the mid 1980s as part of the Olympic bid which was unfortunately only partly carried through. It would have replaced all the benches with seats, built a new concourse and a 5000 seat upper deck on the east side; seating capacity would have been increased to 50,000. Cost was to be $15.8 million. I used to have a clipping from the Calgary Herald showing a colour rendering of the project but this was lost in a move in the 1990s. Don't know why this project was never carried through, but the article noted some concerns about legroom, and the budget overruns on the Saddledome may have had an effect.

Those measures add up to putting lipstick on a pig. Winnipeg chose to do something similar and all they ended up with was new seats that didn't properly fit the outdated legroom of the then Winnipeg Stadium.

Calgery is a wealthy, up and coming city that needs a proper facility and McMahon is past its best before date.

For sure. But nothing that can't be re-created in a new facility.
