The Dedicated Wilkes-Barre Skyline Photo Tread

Wilkes-Barre is a city in Northeast Pennsylvania. It is the county seat, and largest city of Luzerne County. There are about 43,000 people in the city, and over 600,000 in metro area (including Scranton) The city is located on the Susquehanna River, with very scenic mountains surrounding it all around. And oh yeah... did I mention that it happens to be my hometown.

Due to being stuck on dialup, with my fast internet connection temporarily unavailable, I'll start by reposting the ones I put up in the W-B/Scr. general discussion thread. Some of you might have seen those already, but I promise to post many more as soon as possible.

(Unless otherwise noted, all these pictures were taken/copyright by me)

Wide view looking west from East Northampton St in Laurel Run:

Lets move a little bit closer...
(I've also posted this one as the skyline view on Wikipedia)

Entering downtown from Coal Street, looking west:

View east, across the river from Rt 11 in Larksville:

Nice shots of Wilkes-Barre. I guess most cities out that way look a lot bigger than they are. The population of the metro area is quite large.

Question. Do you know off hand how much of the area's electricity is powered from the wind generators??

Those are actually quite new, and more are being built, if I'm not mistaken. We also have a nuclear plant close by (Salem Township, PA) although most of it's output is outsourced elsewhere
As to what is used off the wind generators I'm not really sure. NEPA forumers (dony, MetroJ, .....) help me out here.

As promised, my new city photos. Enjoy.

Foggy downtown from VA Hospital parking lot. Maybe I should try again on a clearer day.

Bonus Points for guessing the mystery angle, this photo was shot from.

Much more to come...

Holy crap, you have wind mills. Or whatever the proper term is. That's massive!

If you'd leave the foreground trees out you could adjust the levels in photoshop and it would look totally clear.

... But with those foreground trees, it's a lot harder. They screw with the color.

The next batch is from Coal Street Park, overlooking downtown from the east.

Obscured Downtown:

Of all the photos taken from park grounds, I like this one the best:

Kings College campus (buildings on the left) and Luzerne County Courthouse (the building on the right with lots of domes):

Lets move for a more open view:

Same spot, but looking more southwestward:

Coal Street Park's downtown panorama (Very badly made, by simply zooming in and cropping one single photo. Please excuse the poor quality)
Scroll >>>>>>>>>

That's it, for today at least. Hope you've liked my little photo thread so far. Will be back.

Actually, I'm not sure how much power is generated or how much of the wind-generated power is returned to the area; I seem to recall that many of the wind turbines are the property of a Florida utility. Ergo, they might be transmitting that energy elsewhere---for profitability. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more accurate informtion.

One of the region's first wind farms was installed at Waymart, east northeast of Scranton/Carbondale. First time I happened upon it i was shocked, having never seen one and surprised (unhappy) at the presence on the beautiful PA mountainscape.......

there's a sizeable coal fired plant along the Susquehanna river at Hunlock's Creek, to the southwest of Wilkes-Barre.

.....there is also a proposal to add a third reactor to Susquehanna Steam Nuclear plant making it only the second in the nation of that size (I think I'd read, don't quote me on this....)

I am not sure about where the power generated by the turbines go, but, like dony, I do recall that Florida company owns them. Haven't read anything from the major local power utility about using those turbines.

As an aside, on certain extra clear days from high up in Dickson City, you can see the wind farm to the north in Waymart, and the one on Bear Mountain near Wilkes-Barre to the south.

For extra fun, take the PA Turnpike, I-476 from the Pittson/Wyoming Valley exit south to the W-B exit and you'll get up close and personal with the 300 ft. tall W-B windmills looming ahead on the nearby ridge.

Well, turns out there is a surface lot on Park Avenue and it has a fantastic view towards downtown (I just realised that a lot of Emporis' Wilkes-Barre pictures were taken from this exact spot. Well, here's more of the same, except this time for free )

More bonus points for spotting Intermodal Center going up:

This one makes it look like we're in a hugely dense city:

Looks like Genetti's Tower is getting a new facelift:

Green downtown:

Did somebody say they like the view from Market Street quite a lot???

Market Street downtown panorama, and this time properly done with multiple images unlike my previous example from Coal Street Park:
